It's a Toyota Starlet in a dress. Seriously.

Big mufflers are easy to put on... so is nitrous, assuming the buttons were real. I wouldn't boost one, either with squeeze or a turbo. It's not the strongest bottom end Toyota ever made. The Paseo is not much more than a little economy car that's nicer to look at, like vat_man said.

Not necessarily. Nothing wrong with decent-looking small cars. But it's not a performance car, if that's what you mean. I'm not sure what you're trying to say by "exclusively for women". It's not like you have to put the seat down to drive it.

there are times when you just can't decide what car you really want after getting your license. damn, if it wasn't for that paseo i saw with all those special modifications. but i think it's a good car for just cruising around (and delivering tofu). and judging from its specs i think it's a class c car.

Keep dissing the Paseo and I'll kick all your asses. The coupe version was a ****ing joke and one of Toyota's few mistakes (keeping the Tercel going as long as they did was another). The convertible was the best Toyota of all time. They shipped less than 800 stateside, and some assembly was required by the purchaser (you had to go out and buy long, sturdy rods that spanned the length of the otherwise weak cloth top, then cut them to fit, though later in the car's short life, a California company known as American Sunroof took care of this). I haven't seen a Paseo convertible since 1999, but I'd gladly kill anyone to get my hands on a red one with a black interior. Mmm...

Edit:

You don't get me. My favourite cars are rare, normal-looking production cars or rare versions of mass-produced cars. Hence my love of the Grand Cherokee TSi, VW Corrado, Isuzu Oasis, Grand Cherokee Freedom, Mazda MPV all-sport in green/tan, Toyota Previa, Cadillac Allante, et cetera.

The Paseo convertible falls squarely into that category, though it's rarer than any of the above cars (except maybe the Oasis). The Paseo is the rarest plant-produced Toyota ever.

Someone in my neighborhood used to have a Previa. It was white I think. Very nice looking van. :) Much better than the new one :yuck:

Yeah I wish VW would make a new Corrado. Those were some sweet little machines and both engines were good to start with. And they were also both really good to tune. I dont mind the new Golfs, but its just not the same as the Corrado. :(

I thought so too, but the new one's growing on me - it's so incredibly competent, it's hard to hate it.

I'm beginning to like it, but I still think it is a tad on the ugly side.

EDIT: I just love using my new FTP :D

Where do you live? The current USDM Toyota minivan is actually quite a bit different (and, from what I understand, better) than the Asian and European one. That would explain your dislike of it.

what i've heard was the paseo is a miniaturized celica, though i don't see any resemblance to the celica. but you're right. the convertible version is cool.

at least this car isn't endorsed by britney spears (remember the toyota vios commercial?)...

The later Paseos did bear some resemblance to the Celica (back anyway):

I live in Florida. I just did a quick search for Previa and I took those 2 images.

Okay, well, here's a brief history of Toyota vans in the US:

- There was the 'van,' which was called the Hi-Ace, Lit-Ace, and Van in various forms in various markets in the early 1980's. Nobody bought these.
- The Previa came out in the early 1990s and went until about 1993, which is weird since nobody bought one of these either.
- The Sienna was new for MY '98, and was originally so popular there were waiting lists.
- The new Sienna is new for MY '04, and bears a slight resemblance to the bottom Previa you posted.

Toyota Paseo comes with exactly 100hp and 86 lb-ft TQ. Nothing special, it was made for the lowest end of the car market, as strictly a person mover, nothing more really.

However, it does weigh close to, or under 2,000lbs which means a (heavily) souped one would tear **** up. A Civic serves the same purpose, has WAY more aftermarket parts, and comes with a fair amount more hp (depending on year). The Civic also has a way more advanced suspension setup compared to cars it competed with. I am not sure if this is true for any Civic's newer than 1999.

1992 through 1995 Paseos (and Tercels) carried a 100hp 1.5l that put out 91 lb-ft, but, along with the Tercel, for 1996 power was dropped to 93 horsepower and torque was increased to 100 lb-ft.

Don't you know anything about slow-selling Toyota products of the mid '90's? Geeze! :P

The engine was okay for the car - not great, but as you say, the car was light so it didn't really need anything too big. An extra 25 horsepower would've done it well, though.
The later Paseos did bear some reseblance to the Celica (back anyway):

That was sort of an all-product Toyota design at the time - you'll note that the '92-'96 Camry has a similar tail-light design, as does (I think) the '91-'95 MR2. The Avalon's first year was '95 and does not carry these tails, so maybe you can see a shift in global design as the years progressed.

The engine is really good. Our Tercel ran on three cylinders because one of the spark plugs died

j/k :D It's a good engine to start out with if you want to learn about car engine. Everything is in the line of sight, so there isn't much work to move the spark plugs, the oil or anything else :)

Probably AT since it was just a people mover as said by 12 sec. civic and friends. Then again, I dont know anything about this car. Usually if they are just people movers they are auto...

Usually, but Toyota often sold MT as standard just to make people pay extra for AT - they did it on both Camry and Corolla, as I recall.

With that said, I'm not sure about the Paseo/Tercel.
