Does GT4 have serious competition now?

I dunno... It doesn't look that great in some shots... And what's up with that Hummer? Though there is a De Tomaso Pantera... Could be a good game anyway.

Umm, Ridge Racer Evolution was on PSone. This game has almost nothing to do with Ridge Racer. This game will be geared more toward simulation, not arcade gameplay of Ridge Racer. And no GT4 doesn't really have competition. It could prove to be a successful game, but it will not outshine GT in quality, or the amounts of units sold.

Yes, I know all that, but that's my point. It now looks like it's gunning for GT4 with a more simulation type racing game. I'm not debating that PD will "outshine" other attempts at their succsess, it's just that somebody appears to be trying, though. That's what I meant. Sorry you misunderstood me.

I don't like what Namco is doing with the Ridge Racer franchise. What made Ridge Racer stand out was it's style. The futuristic looking cars, beautiful tracks, and female mascots. Now, it has none of that and is just a Gran Turismo clone. I think it will sell some, maybe to the hardcore fan, but not many. Ridge Racer will fall to the levels of Driving Emotion Type S, Apex, and Sega GT.

Solid Lifters:
Sorry about misinterpretation on my part too. But look how many games (like Viper Zero noted) tried to copy GT's style. Sega GT came the closest, but the gameplay just felt weak. I don't think Sony has anything to worry about.

Viper Zero:
I believe Namco stated that it's splitting it's racing genre into two, one going the way of GT, the other going the way of RR. So after Namco is done with R: RE, expect to see the real Ridge Racer 6.

I agree, those screenshots look great. Personally, I hope that more game developers try to surpass the GT series. It might stir up some healthy competition, then PD would think twice about putting off release dates. :)

No it wouldn't, they'd be even more determined to get the game as perfect as possible, as for Ridge race Evolution, on the PSOne, it was Revolution but thats just me being picky.

Of course not! They wouldn't license a game for someone if they saw direct competition to one of their own. That would just be stupid.

It may have similar atributes, but Gran Turismo is very spacific in its approach and the market it is targeting.

What I would like is a game with lower quality graphics that supports more cars on the track and possibly a simple track editor.

Hmmm... There are shots of the Monaco F1 track in there, too. Somehow i'm thinking PD's license isn't that official...

It's Sony's licence over Gran Turismo I hink he's talking about, even if PD gopt bought out and owned by Microsoft Gran Turismo would still belong to Sony.

This game's been in development for some time - we first discussed it here mid last year. Interesting that it's surfaced again, and I guess it implies the game wasn't as finalised as the first shots suggested.

Exactly, they'd HAVE to be more determined in order to put out a superior product. And not announce pre-holiday release dates, then postpone for another 6 months. I guess I was speaking more towards making their consumer market happier if there were a chance of losing sales. Competition is good.

hmm looks ok,

i advise u all check out the new pgr2 demo, its seriously incredible. If gt4 is gonna be better then this...well...arg!
If anyone is wondering, from the demo i can say

1. It's the best looking racing game ive ever seen (may even look better then gt4)
2. It's got the best sound ive ever heard in a racing game
3. It plays damn well, and is great fun
4. I'm gonna buy it!

You should give it a go if possible, it's a nice change from gt games :)

It's very good, but it's more arcade oriented than GT, I get bored of that style after a few weeks, every GT game so far has lasted ages.

Some how I feel like it's not a question of "competition" but more of that like with cars that are imported over here we get screwed because they make everything anti-nice and then bring it over here... so we got crappy games and crappy cars. I know this sounds like an extreme but ya know I've seen nice stuff cars and games from japan and other places.

At this point for me any game that comes out now will NEVER touch GT, some analogies even though I don't like or agree with some of them.

Any game that comes out to rival GT is like...

How the RIAA so missed the boat on the whole mp3 deal and will aways play catch up.

Having a new "sports car" come out to rival the corvette a US Icon.

Another mp3 player that says it's an "ipod" killer

Yep, the cars feel heavier than the first one, the react better to slight adjustments and it is more relistic handling but you still have to pull slides and stuff to get the points, I enjoy that to an extent but I prefer GT, but PGR2 is quite alot better than PGR.

What I meant was, why would Sony allow someone to make games for their console that are better than the games that Sony makes? That's ... bass ackwards

RRE will be a good arcade, that's for sure.

Big benefit which I can see is that game has some neat LM cars in it, like Audi or Bentley model. Guess that mean we can expect them in GT4, together with Hummer car. My logic goes to very tight collaboration between Sony and Namco (licences, etc.) and let us not forget that Suzuka is in RRE, so maybe, just maybe...

Dont forget the Dome S101:D
(the car that raced agaisnt the Bentley in the pictures;) )

There have been multiple stories in PSM and EGM on this game and I have to admit that it looks nice, and sounds like a game that I would enjoy, but unless it gets fantastic ratings it will remain a possible rental. The graphics look pretty sweet, though, and the car selection appears to be decent so I guess we'll have to wait and see.
