Doing better than you thought you would?

I know it is still really early but my goal overall was to make the top 1000 in my region. I'm currently at 102 in the west. Anyone else doing better than they thought they would so far?

Yup. It's pretty unnerving to be sitting at a low spot (34th overall at time of post) knowing that there will be thousands of people logging in and trying after me. I'm at where I'm at. I'm not going to get much faster; period. Problem I see is if I were to try this, oh... let's say January 18th and I couldn't place, well, I just wouldn't spend too much time. However, you spend a month racing and still get beat out, it'd be disheatening

I'm not too concerned with taking all this time and even getting beat. It is just a game after all. If anything, I'll get more out of the game. I'm improving my lap times every day by learning where I'm slow.

So far I am doing better than I thought. Right now I sit 48th in the midwest and I was only hoping to crack the top 128. I am consistantly getting faster after really struggling on Tsukuba and Rome reverse. This is a lot of fun and like scir said, it only adds to my enjoyment of the game. If I do lose out and don't make the 2nd round then I know I was beat fair and square by some really fast drivers. :gtpflag:

I was the first few days and the first track. 74th! Thats great! Ive since been pushed down to 222nd and had trouble even matching my fast lap. Rome Im around 220, Cape around 340. I waited until GT5 to buy a ps3, so I was going to wait until next year to buy the whole shebang. This academy was the only reason I went ahead and bought everything now, because "I needed to know where I rank." Now I know. Im slightly dissapointed as I thought I was a good driver, but knowing that there will always be someone faster, and that having two jobs, a wife and a dog takes time seems to ease my pain. Congrats to people who can devote serious time (and money) and do well. I dont think I'll improve enough to make Round 2 with a DS3 and an auto.

On the first night after about 12 minutes I posted the 4th best Tsukuba time in the Northeast (1:05.7 at the time, in playing a little in the last 2 night I've only managed to take off 0.1s). I was pretty shocked. The competition has caught up a bit, and I wasn't as good at Cape Ring (I've only run that course for the mandatory A-spec races, and did these exactly once). So right now I'm 9th overall in the Northeast with maybe a shot at 6th (with times as of last night).

If anything this is kind of annoying - top 8 from the Northeast after round 3 will move on to the national finals. Now I feel like I have to keep up and try to make at least the top 16 cut to round 3 and maybe even the top 8 cut...

By the end of the first week you need to be at least top 25 to secure a top 128 by the end of it. If you are not top 25, better keep trying. Just don't think because you are ranked high like top 100 or even 50 you're already going to the next round.

I'm currently 18th in the Southeast and I didn't think I would be in the top 500 lol u guys think I have a good shot at round 2 if I play every day

I'm doing better than I thought, but it's from forums like these and listening to the people who are in the top spots advise. I'm 88th over all as of now and fairly surprised...... Goog times now if I can just get my kids out from in front of the tv and the dog to shut up!!!!!!! Lol

Actually, YES!

Last night that I checked I was 117th of my region.

I was 300 something before, then attempted Cape Ring and that brought me up to the 117. Cool.

yeah, I am currently 103 in my region as of last night anyway. That is with a controller too, the DFGT decided not to work last night for whatever reason! I hope this new wheel gets released soon.

wow, you guys are doing super. I laid down my initial laps yesterday and came in 818 in region 31xxth over all. I expected to be *way* back though. I see a lot of time I could scrub off of the last event, but I really don't like driving in the other two.

I also own the round 1 prize already, and I'm way too fat to be a race car driver, so finding motivation to do my best is here is pretty hard.

Well, I wasn't able to get logged in to use the dang thing until last night (psn log in was messed up). Only had about 2hrs to run on all three. Don't know what I ended up at combined last night, but I was 72nd, 44th, & 75th individually.

I've been sick so haven't been on GT5 too much this past week, plus work, holidays, relatives in town, etc... Hopefully i can get some time in over the weekend though.

I was 3rd in my region (west) last night so yes! I just learned that for the top 32 you go somewhere and race against each other, which I think sucks cause I dont play this game very much so I am not going to know the tracks ect and there are just too many variables out of our control.

I am sure you get ample practice if you make it that far. Nothing wrong with bringing the Ps3 to the hotel!

I have to say I'm shocked at how well I am doing thus far.

Forza is the only racing game I have ever been good at, and its because I used the braking line as my crutch. It allowed me to compete at a high level. I was pretty accomplished too, winning over $24,000 in cash and prizes. But now that GT5 is out and FM3 is getting old, a lot of my car club members are making the switch. GT Academy is the first chance Ive had to compare myself to other players. After day 1, I was really surprised at how well I was doing, especially since the line is forced off. At first I wasnt sure if Id even make top 128 in my region, but now Im already looking ahead to round 2. =)

Yeah TRC you are like 1st or 2nd is the west right? I know i've used your ghost a few times

Yeah just knowing the tracks i guess is my concern. I've done the license tests and some special events but i havent done any of the real races really. I would much rather it be time trial on our own where someone isnt going to crash into me. Actually, I would much rather it be time trials in real cars

I didn't know either of these tracks before turning on GT5. I hate 2 out of the 3 tracks. I hate underpowered understeering pigs.

well yeah i didnt know rome or cape, but i was able to practice and learn them. I think for the live ones its pretty much going to be a qualifying race and the race, dont think there will be any time to learn the tracks.

don't know rome or cape, still haven't got that lap that "felt so right", sitting at 52nd overall west. tons of room to improve on cape.

Actually I am doing better than I thought, currently 5th in West region. I bought a PS3 just for GT Academy and I came from rFactor and iRacing so I expected a bigger learning curve. That being said though I'm still learning about the GT5 physics and what it takes to be fast with them. It's a different style of driving than rFactor and iRacing.

I would like to know how it is different, as I have not played either of those game. I would like to though.

Stated several times on the iRacing forums:
"If iRacing is too hard, why don't you go play Gran Turismo..."

I'm not surprised you are doing well if you have legit sim racing experience like rFactor and iRacing.

I just made the Top 20 in the West. Certainly don't think I can stay there but I'll be content if I'm in the Top 200 by the end.

This is very surprising considering I've been using the analog sticks since GT1 and only started occasionally using a wheel for Prologue six months ago. I didn't think I would be this fast this quickly.

(though having consistent laps is still elusive for me right now) :ouch:

fighting hard to move up from 298 in west.... not as easy as i thought it would be. also made me realize i suck at this game. haha

6 months is plenty of time honestly. The average figure is it takes about 50 hours to fully adjust to a wheel, give or take per user. For me it was easy to rack that time up b/c the wheel is SO much more fun and gratifying.
