Door Number

I've seen a few comments in the past week about the door number being an indicator of your "expected" finish or ranking within your grid... just wondering if this is actually the case? It seems very random to me.

Whatever the reason is, I find it incredibly annoying, we spend considerable amounts of time creating Livery's only to have it obscured by some ugly big number that seems to serve no purpose.
Is this connected to your door number? I don't think so buddy.

Kitchenboy &Vanessa - are we talking two different things here? The numbers you want to put on your own car from the Livery's from them or are we talking about the number given corresponding with your starting number in the grid? If that's the case - all more clear. (kind of)

I think Kitchenboy was complaining that he created a nice livery and a small area on each side was covered by the door number

We're talking about the number that is assigned to you in Sports races, not one you put on yourself when you design your livery.
@Robben , it is not exactly tiny, the one on the bonnet is quite large in fact, if it served a purpose i would not mind, but at the moment it seems completely random, so honestly i don't see the point of it, my opinion, you don't have to share it

There are two options:

1. the numbering system has a method in grading or ranking the racers - does it?
2. there is no method, in which case numbers are applied (randomly) to replicate real racing

It's 1, but it's slightly broken. It grades you on your DR score, but gets confused whe C a D drivers are in the same race as A, B or S.

Is that a fact though or conjecture? Seems like the mention of it being "broken" is an excuse to make the theory fit

I have yet to prove it wrong since I've been in mid DR:B comparing when DR:S and DR:A drivers were in the room. Now I'm in DR:A with DR:S and DR:A and when the occasional DR:B is in the room I still can't prove it wrong.
However, on my 2nd account, going from DR:E to DR:B it has been pretty random. Like I could have door number 4 as a DR:C in a room of DR:B.

It's not random. When I end up being the fastest in the group, I look at my door number and surprise surprise it's 1 or 2.
When I'm among faster races than me and I'm hovering mid-pack, it's no surprise that it's anywhere between 14 and 20.

For me, if I keep beating or matching my door number, my DR raises.

Fair enough, but I started 12th then 11th on Kamigawa on Weds... door number 3 and then 14 with no additional qualifying in between. I do check but it seems to fluctuate a lot.

I expect the other people in the room have changed a lot too.

I like it when I set a good qualifier and start as the first DR:A guy behind the DR:S guys, check my door number and it's like 15th or something. It really takes the stress off.
On the other hand, when I set a good qualifier and start 18th, check my door number and its 9 I think crikey, how the hell am I meant to get that.

It's normal. In a 20 driver grid, having DR points fluctuating 20 DR points between them all is pretty easy to happen. And the lower the DR ranking of a driver, the more his numbers will fluctuate.

Fair enough... after reading it the other day, I now always (superstitiously) check the number and have that position as minimum target

Fair point I guess 👍

I used to always try to check mine too, sometimes... I couldn't see it no matter what I did. Now, I don't worry about it.

I do think it is related to your rank within the room. If you are 1, you have the highest DR points in the room. I don't think it is where you are expected to finish. I have gotten points finishing below that number. Points seem to be ELO for the most part.

Should you not expect to finish above those with lower DR points than you?

I'm sure you are, I just don't think the door number is related. Personally, I don't focus on that in race. I don't know if the guy I'm battling is an S or a C. I think you will find however, the higher DR is more associated with consistency than actual speed. I am fairly consistent and a mid DR A. I am not the fastest. I do move up through the field, by consistency, and usually finish amongst A and S drivers.

Ok, enter with my second account which is pretty new last evening in a Sports lobby. Had a qualification time of 4th, entered the lobby with less than a minute remainig, the room was a mess in terms of SR and DR - SR were from A to C, DR were from B to E. With me being at the time SR: B, DR: D. Got a door #1 - so my strong opinion is - it is random and nothing else matters.

I always check my doornumber during warm up. Until mid december it seemed like stated: Did I finish better then my doornumber I gained DR points, when I finished worse I lost points.

However, since January the behavior changed. For example yesterday (Race A, VW Golf @ Dragon Trail - Seaside II) I was in a race with B and C drivers (I am (was) DR:D) and my Doornumber was #5. I finished 6th and gained almost 1k points for my DR-Rating (according to Milhouse Stats-Page).

I'm with you.....perfect livery, and then BAM! They slap on a stupid number. I've been making liveries around the number since there is no way around it.

Yes that's the way to do it. Make racingnumber friendly livery's.
Firts put the number on the car, then work your livery around it.
Also looks a lot cleaner than when your decals dissapear underneath your racingnumber.
