Downshifting sequence???

I just picked myself up a nice G25 and it's great very well made for the most part. Now obviously the whole reason to buy a G25 is because of the H-shifter and clutch. Keep in mind I have never driven a manual transmisson in real life so I can't just jump in and play.

Shifting from 1st to 6th gear is pretty simple and I think I know how to do it but downshifting is another question. So my question is what is the proper way to downshift from 6th gear to 1st?

Thanks for the vids DDMv2. After watching the vids it seems it was mostly upshifting but I think I got the gist of it. That heel and toe technique seems very advanced.

So to sum it up (without the use of the heel and toe technique) for example: Let's say you were driving down the Monza straight in 6th gear getting ready to shift into 1st gear:

lift off throttle, brake, clutch in, shift to 5th, lift off clutch, lift off brake

brake, clutch in, shift to 4th, lift off clutch, lift off brake

brake, clutch in, shift to 3rd, lift off clutch, lift off brake

brake, clutch in, shift to 2nd, lift off clutch, lift off brake

brake, clutch in, shift to 1st, lift off clutch, lift off brake

is this correct?

The exact technique will (real world) vary for racing driver to racing driver, and from racing school to school.

The following is quite a nice simple guide from one of the (many) driving and racing books I have.

As you can see it pretty much covers the sequence you have described above, but you do not lift off the brakes during the downshift sequence, that would be a very, very bad move.

you could also downshift from one to the next gear without letting go of the brake. You know, let the car brake under the brakes and the engine, via the gearbox. Once you're going slow enough you can skip a gear, like go from 4th to 2nd. But never from 3rd to 1st. 1st gear should never be downshifted to... only used to start up... that's just my view.

Right thanks guys:tup:

so now onto the revised version:

lift off throttle, keep brake depressed, clutch in, shift to 5th, lift off clutch,

clutch in, shift to 4th, lift off clutch,

clutch in, shift to 3rd, lift off clutch,

clutch in, shift to 2nd, lift off clutch,

clutch in, shift to 1st,

sound about right?

You don't necessarily have to use all gears on the way down through the box. Depending on the type of car you're driving, the brakes, tyres etc you can skip some or all of the gears between your current gear and the target gear. In the V8 Supercars series, for example, drivers often choose to downshift directly from 5th or 6th gear to 2nd gear. Or for drivers to downshift using the "one above" technique, i.e. if you want to go from 6th to 2nd you downshift directly from 6th to 3rd and then from 3rd to 2nd. The benefits of skipping gears on the way down are multiple. Firstly, it's quicker to shift once to than four times. Secondly, the less you shift the less chance of making a mistake. Thirdly you're taking engine braking out of the equation almost entirely, giving you a more consistent stopping power from just the brakes.

Here's a video of Mark Skaife's feet at work from the Hidden Valley round of V8 Supercars this year. Watch the gear indicator along the bottom to see what gear he's currently in. Note that the gearbox in V8 Supercars can be used in a clutchless fashion, so on most of the upchanges he's totally flat on the throttle (flatshifting) and not using the clutch at all. I don't know if any of the cars in GT4 allow clutchless shifting, but I suspect not.

If you have a good timing you can upshift any manual car without using the clutch. Not downshifting though.

I can upshift and downshift without using the clutch in my car (Peugeot 406 with a manual gearbox) but I'm not sure if the game allows it.

i'm just curious, how does that work then? dont you mess up your clutchplate (or whatsit called in english) after 3 times?

Nope. With enough patience and practice, you can ease a shifter from one gear into another without touching the clutch pedal, by matching the RPM correctly.

Basically, you know how when you shift up, your engine goes from a high RPM to a lower one? To make the same shift without using the clutch, all you have to do is pull the shifter out of gear, let the RPM fall to that "lower" number, and then nudge the shifter into the next gear until it slides in effortlessly. You do the opposite with downshifting.

It isn't a quick or advisable method to shift, and can mess up your synchros and/or gear teeth if you don't do it right.

...oh, and I bet the G25 doesn't simulate it.

my father drove a 4speed manual, 1971 monaro, about 600 k's once with his left leg in a cast. he learnt to shift gears without the clutch pretty quick :)
