Drift Handling

I was testing out the drift mode in practice today for the first time today as I wanted to get into drifting. I didn't get much time with it, but from what I felt, the handling was COMPLETELY different to what it's like in a normal race. The car seemed to reach higher revs much more quickly and just seemed to be more willing to slide than it usually would.

Am I right in thinking now that GT5 has a "drift mode" and when you choose drift events/practice the car is going to handle completely differently and fake?
If this is true, is it better to learn to drift in race mode if you want a more authentic experience? I found when trying it in races, just tapping the ebreak would spin the car out.

Am I just being fail, and also have some settings on somewhere I need to shut off?

Thanks.

Are you using Comfort Hard tires?

I do not believe that drift mode and drift events/practice mode changes the drifting experience, the only difference I see is the points system.. Because when I go on practice mode, and practice with my DFGT, drifting feels the same in any other mode.

The physics in 'drift mode' ARE different. As are the offline, rally, and online physics.

That's all I could really think of, that the tires might have made a massive difference. I was using comfort hard when I tried drift (both race and drift were tried in a Nissan Fairlady, tuned following the details in a post about a great starter drift car) then when I tried I timetrial practice I didn't change any settings. I'm thinking maybe the tires were automatically changed and it made a big difference, but it was a practice so I don't know. :S

I was doing this all on a g27. Like I said I didn't get much time with it today, but it just felt extremely different to me. I haven't found anything stating that they handle differently in different modes though. I have all aids off except abs at 1 in normal races. The only thing other than tires I can think of is if Drift has a different set of aids, and maybe they were all turned on as default.

I guess I'll find out tonight, but my day would be a lot nicer if I got a confirmation that it should be the same. This is something I looked forward to in this game.

Thanks.

Scratch all that's written above I guess then. That's disappointing. Can you elaborate at all? or should I just keep searching around??

Having not drifted in 'drift mode' for probably a few months it's hard to be specific, but I know there is notable difference. Having been drifting for over half year now on the DFGT, many of my cars are tuned to a state where they feel most comfortable for me to use online, and each work with my style in some way. When these well suited tunes are brought to the drift mode, the slight adjustments to 'assist' the player become noticable, and change the feel in some way. Whether it's between the steering and the wheels, in the force feedback, the tyre grade or the physics overall, there is something going on. Tomorrow I will hop on and give specifics, as not so much can be worked out through my ipod right now :D

I thought I was the only one who noticed this! The physics are Wayy different from online mode.

I've noticed this as well. Online rooms seem to be made of ice compared to Offline mode (maybe I exaggerated a little but you get the idea).

As a racer, I can tell you that online races are a second per lap slower, and harder on tires. As a drifter, it likely means that drifting online is harder, since, according to lap times, there's less grip.

Try this guys:

do a reverse entry on a drift seasonal & do one in a online lobby, obviously you'll be full lock, same track & corner too, take a picture of both from the same angle & compared the steering lock.

Here, full lock on both, compare the steering lock.

The online and offline physics are definitely different. I noticed this with My lotus wheelie car.you can pull wheelies from a stand still offline but online you can't. You have to do a donut to get the front end up offline.

^^ Not just that. Seriously, the whole physics system is different. Compare lap times...

There is FAR more than just the lock that differs between modes.

Yeah there is... from what I've noticed myself, cars feel more grippy off-line, which is why a lot of people that try drifting only for the first time say that they feel like they're on ice.

+1

Comfort Hards offline feels like, comfort mediums online. I find you can pull out of drifts easier offline.
