Can it be done??

The only way I can see for a drift comp to work is for contenders to submit short videos of a set series of corners. This is already limiting the amount of entrants.

I guess a web site would have to be set up so that the videos could be viewed and voted on.

Voting/ marking how would this be carried out. Marks out of ten for style?? A poll in the forum??

So where would you hold the comp......personally I'd plump for the turns 2,3,4 & 5 of apricot hill.....should produce a short vid of about 30 seconds.

Would it need to be split into classes for drivetrain (FF,FR,4WD,RR) and controller type (DS2 or wheel)??

So is can it be done?? ;)

Thio and I have discussed this before. i think it's a good idea, but there's a lot that needs to be planned out. pm me if you want to know any details...

What happens with people who drifts with Dpad??:( . Don't forget us.;) .
The idea is very good. But not all of us can make a video. My technique is only slideshow, taking photos in front of my TV.

Judging the comp would be difficult I Think a panel of Judges would have to be formed to weed out all the ****e and forward say the 5 or 10 best performances for general voting.

I also think that video is a must so that the hole series of turns can be viewed and not a snap shot (no offence meant) as previously said this would limit the number of competitors :(

prhaps a poll on the number of people with access to video capture equipment would be required.

Once the website had been setup the infa structure would be there to hold many different competitions at any time. :)

I don't have the knowledge to create said website.

This appears that it would require a massive amount of work to pull off........maybe through co operation it could be done ;)

we can give bonus points for use of sim-tires, or lower horsepower cars. since we all know the less hp and less grip takes the most skill to drift. also yes for the different drivetrain classes...then there could be inter-competition for the drivetrains as well. you could simply show the clip of the turn, and judge it in certain categories. speed, countersteer, angle, smoothness. it will be a great competition..but it's going to require tons of work. work that's already in progress ;) im gonna be on cable starting saturday, so ill be up for the comp. hehe

heh ya Sheron! if there is a competition, maybe you and I should be the judges for the D-Pad Category :D

Props to those who use D-pads! I used the D-pad back in the GT2 days :D

If you want to do this drift comp, it's going to discriminate the people who don't have a way to hook up their PS2s to their comp. That's not right ethikally ;)

mmmmm.....I drift with high powered cars (if you can consider a 338hp-Trueno high powered) and soft tyres (from medium to super soft) rear. I don't drift with a ~300hp and sims because it's other way to drift (I've tried it), I mean, the technique is very diffrent: If you drift with sims (I don't know), try (for example) my 200sx type X, or S13 Silvia settings. You'll know you have to change your style of driving.
I think there's no easy-hard (slicks-sims) settings, just different.:) ;)

I agree. Just because some people drift with 600+hp beasts doesn't mean they take the easy way out. It's a different style.

Like in D1. They use everything from little hachirokus to fire-breathing 500hp Toyota Chasers. It's all in your style.

I was thinking on posting this subject.But I would not be able to compete since I have no clue on how to put videos on-line.But here are my suggestions.

They should be divided into 2 classes amatuer,pro(for newb/pro)::

The drift should be judged on angle,technique,speed, and length::

Okay, let's do this:

Anyone with the ability to upload GT3 Videos onto their computer can participate. You can either put pictures up or you can load videos, but the time and the speedometer needs to be there. There will be certain cars that the participant can use and what race track the drifts will take place. We can have two divisions: Racing and Exhibition. There will be two ladders in each division: Novice and Professional. If anyone wants to poke at this idea, then PM me because I really want to see what we can do with this.

The only problem is that some people who want to participate in this may not have any way to upload GT3 videos onto the computer. Then, what are we going to do about that?

I like the idea of pro/ am classes the pro class could require a driver to drift through several corners such as turn 2,3,4 & 5 at apricot hill the am class could be resticted to a single corner ;)

The upload of video is the biggest problem, as many people don't have the facility to capture video clips (me included) and I would have no idea on how to upload them anyway (need idiots guide). I guess if people have access to a camcorder and relevant cables that may be one way round the capture problem. A cheap capture card or USB device is the other answer.

A fast internet connection would also be needed.

The tyre question is a tricky one.......yet more different classes....this is gettin complex.......personally I think sim tyres are the way to go, don't understand using grippy tyres for going sideways.....kinda defeats the objective.

A good starting point might be to restrict cars to FR drivetrain. :D

Exhibition drifting is the way to go :D how do you judge what makes a good drift?? Combination of style control & accuracy. Points deducted for spinning or going onto the grass??

what i'm doing..and for many of you would be the best solution - at radioshack they have a device called a Dazzle. it's just like having a video capture card..hooks up to USB. i think they are only $65?? good for many things besides gran turismo replays too ;)

don't think anyone will submit a video where they mess up (i hope..)

You can never tell :lol: some sort of criteria needs to be laid down for judging drifts so that drivers know what to aim for

man i love you guys idea im on it you know, damn that be the best thing in GTpanet, i hope it works well and im ready to do what it takes to drift hard, but i only use super soft, can super soft and sim be in the same contest or not, but yeah im in it, damn whoever comes out with this idea is great idea but lets hope it works, because i cant wait!!!!!!!!

Okay, let's try this then. I'll talk to Jordan as to whether there should be a drifting forum where we can have competitions :) I hope this turns out to be a success. BTW, people really don't have to submit videos. Like Sheron and I, we just post pictures. I'll try my best to make the pictures as small as they can so that they can load up fast for 56k'ers [that's what I'm using :(] I am willing to be one of the judges to start off. PM me if you want to be one of the judges and let's see how you can qualify :) For the people who don't have a way to upload GT3 videos onto your computer, you might as well watch the competitors and possibly you can be a judge also. Here are the classes that we are going to start off with:

Racing: this division is going to judge how fast you can go through a corner without spinning out while maintaining control through a corner with the car drifting *duh!*
--> Professional
--> Novice

Exhibition: this division is going to see how sideways you can get through a corner. Speed doesn't matter in this case. And of course, the participant has to maintain the control of the car through a corner.
--> Professional
--> Novice

I'll start a new thread about this new competition later today then :)

edit: It was hard to decide who's a professional and who's an amateur, so I just started a ladder depending on drivetrain :)

i think there should be a division where analog drifters can try and wheel users can try there. we all know if you have a wheel, your already on a whole diff level.i would be happy to judge analog drivers.
