Hi Guys,

Any tips on drifting with the steering wheel? Finding it really difficult for some reason with the pad it's never been an issue.

Any tips welcome.

Thanks

Don't overcorrect. Very easy to do with a wheel. Throttle control is very important too. Took me a very long time to get OK at drifting. Still have much more room to improve, but it's satisfying knowing how far I've come.

Its freaking hard....especially compared to the DS3. Im sure it will be much more fun when I (we) do finally learn. My biggest issue is the habit of overcorrecting. I have found throttle control much more easy than the DS3.

Practice on Tsukuba. My technique is turn very quickly right before the corner, let the steering wheel slide through my hands (make adjustments if needed), and carefully modulate the throttle for the amount of angle you want. I'm still not to great at coming out of the drift, but my advice is let out of the throttle, grasp the wheel firmly in the direction you want to go, and a do a quick tap on the brakes. I consider myself an OK drifter. On Tsukuba I can get about 9000 points on a good lap using only the corners for drifting (not the straight stretches).

I'm with the OP. My problem seems to be not getting counter-steer/opposite lock quick enough and I tend to spin. Or it could be too much throttle.

When coming out of drifts, you need to fight the force of the steering wheel. It's not going to want to move, but forcing it back to being straight is how i keep it from getting all squirrelly.

i.e.: that long right at Tsukuba. The steering wheel is jerking left throughout the turn, as you finish you have to crank it right; fighting the force of the car, however many rotations needed to bring it straight.

get used to the power delivery of a particular car and tbh starting off in something fairly slow is best, an s-body or rwd skyline in standard form are very good...

start of entering a corner normally then power out till you get the hang of that, try to make the loss/gain of traction as smooth as possible "feathering" the throttle helps smooth this out.

Many people make the mistake of using too much power to begin with and go crazy with handbrakes entering corners. Just start racing "loose" with the rear on the edge all the time you'll soon learn fast.

When you go into an oversteer, you should let the wheel spin by itself. You take hold of it when you need to balance it out, then countersteer.

I never realized how to do it properly, but then, I went practicing on Kart Space and it's PERFECT for learning.

Use
- Toyota Levin/Trueno! '83
- Stock.(maybe comfy hard tires)
- Take the corners as if you were going to do a fast lap time. (Not as if you were going into a drift!(you will end up drifting anyway))
- Start with Tsukuba.

This is what usually helps those i try to teach.(not that i teach many)
;)

I got my wheel in October and tried to teach myself to drift with it. I eventually gave as I'm pretty good with the DS3 and I do still have tonnes of fun doing it with the DS3.

I agree with most of you, not only when drifting though. I overcorrect all the time when just normally racing.

If the car wants to spin around, just let off the throttle!

Next step is to control the turn with the throttle(with just a small amount of turning(id say max 90degrees)), and at last counter-steer to make it wide! ;)

Hi drift community..

I started to drift a while ago and i just cant stop.. i bought all fr cars premium and all fr standard cars ( worth to drift..), tuned them drift them.. i tuned them myself, they behave very good but id like to try some other tunes but im a wheel drifter and some tunes here are made for pad, or i just cant find them.. if someone can help me or post some tune for wheel id be much thankfull.. i just want to try some other tune and maybe learn something more..

If there is a wheel drifter add me maybe we can share some setups..

The more I look into it the more I want to just use the DS3!!

Don't give up now! I know it's frustrating, but once you get the hang of it, you're going to hate using your controller. It took me a good 3-5 months to be able to hold drifts and link corners. I learned on my DFGT (R.I.P.) in a Levin AE86 with 160hp and comfort hard tires. Pretty sure I had an LSD on the car also.

As far as wheel settings go, I'd say it's what you feel comfortable with.

Well,
I bought my Logitech DFGT a few weeks ago... it takes a hell of alot of practice... im not going to give you advice cos it wouldnt be worth anything.. i keep thinking of giving up and going to the controller... just take a brake.. do some races.... tune a car, change the wheels and colour... get some food, have a smoke... then get back to it... if you feel lonely, add me on PSN.. we can be cra....rubbish together :-)

basically, when you're urging to give up due to furstration, just keep on watching this...

You can thank me later :sly:

After a long pause from drifting in forza 3 I bought ps3 and GT5 because I got g25 as a gift and I've like "only" drifted for three days now trying to get used...:)

I feelt the same so easy with DS3 so hard with my g25:grumpy:... Maybe becasue I am stupid and is drifting a 700hp supra with the wheel:confused:so I took BMWroberts advice but choosed 86 GT -12 (comfort hard tires)

I started everything standard tested it a bit got a feeling of how the car reacts I was getting like maximum 2k:banghead: on tsubuka. After a bit I bought suspenssion and lowered it and drifted until I could control it, then i changed the rear toe and tested it again and so on... havn't upgraded any perfomance only LSD, clutch wheel and so on. And now I'am getting 7k instead of 2k.👍. Did all this in like 30min-1h.

Now it's barca vs real madrid !! :)

Not everyone has what it takes to learn 900 by the attitudes of many around here. Here's a demo of my learning:

MAN UP and LEARN!

well, i am going to start to learn...i will try and get a first effort of drifting using my DFGT this weekend.
Drifting on the DS3 is easy, cant wait to master the wheel :)

Exactly, I find drifting with DS3 challangeless :/

And for the started of this thread, It takes time to drift properly with the wheel ;)
Advise would be try a stock car with Comfort Hard tyres, I did it with RX-7 on the speedway track on the turns right after the bridge and tunnel. That place is actually the best place to learn transition and learn how to hold a drift in a turn.. Give it a try and few days later you will get it :)

Good luck!

Well, i had a play last night for 40 mins on Tsukuba in a Standard RX7 running CH on my DFGT. I found it had to get the back end around without trying to use the hand brake, I was looking to be smooth then forcing it. Then i changed the transmission and dropped the to speed. This made the car really 'punchy' and i went from a max score of 2000ish to 5800. I am happy with that for the time i was on the PS3, Also learning when to start correcting the slide too. I earnt you need to fight the FFB, it you are turning with the FFb the car just spins out.

Hope to have another go over the weekend, I will try to upload my video to over the weekend to show my start point. Lets see how much i can improve over a week :)
