A bit of a silly idea came to me, since GT Planet members are very active in watching racing series around the world maybe have some kind of driver of the year thing.

Say we vote for the driver of each Catagory(F1, WEC, Indycar, WRC etc) where people put down what driver and then we vote on it, like the best F1 cars poll we had and the winner of each one goes into a final poll for driver of the year.

Doesn't have to be official or anything just thought it would be a good idea for when most racing is finished for the season and we have something to talk about?

Thoughts?

I did something like this on another forum for a few years but it always ended up being won by an F1 driver by a huge margin, I gave up when Nick Tandy (the legend) wasn't voted the greatest last year.
Given how much people here are into Endurance racing and Touring Cars I think it's a Fair shot.

Maybe give it a go then, the polls here allow more options which would help. Out of interest here are the results from a couple of years on that other forum (I had to narrow it down to 8 options to get in the poll):
2014:
Code:
Sebastien Buemi 10 (5.4%)
Lewis Hamilton 58 (31.2%)
Jose Maria Lopez 21 (11.3%)
Sebastien Ogier 9 (4.8%)
Will Power 8 (4.3%)
Daniel Ricciardo 50 (26.9%)
Petter Solberg 5 (2.7%)
Colin Turkington 1 (0.5%)
Somebody Else 24 (12.9%)

2013:
Code:
Sebastian Vettel 81 (47.9%)
Romain Grosjean 27 (16%)
Mike Rockenfeller 0 (0%)
Sebastien Ogier 12 (7.1%)
Jimmie Johnson 5 (3%)
Yvan Muller 6 (3.6%)
Kevin Magnussen 4 (2.4%)
Scott Dixon 4 (2.4%)
Somebody Else 30 (17.8%)

F1: Daniel Ricciardo - What can I say, he's driven brilliantly all year and hasn't put a foot wrong once(as far as I remember)
WEC: Lucas DiGrassi - Superb speed and consistency in that P1, looks like the fastest guy in the P1 field ATM. If only Audi could sort out their reliability issues.
NAEC: Pipo Derani - Just watch Daytona and Sebring and argue otherwise...
ELMS: Simon Dolan - Not the quickest guy, but definitely one of the best silvers in endurance racing as a whole. Super consistent and pretty darn quick.
Formula E: DiGrassi - Once again, he has really stunned me this year, In FE S2 he took the fight to Buemi in a slower car and came very close to winning the championship and in Hong Kong for S3 he came from the back of the grid, ran 1 extra stop due to a black/orange flag, and still came home in second.

Overall driver of the year: Lucas DiGrassi

So after the F1 Race this weekend I'm going to start doing Thread for each series for nominations.

I'm thinking of Having these Catagories
F1 Driver of the Year
Prototype Driver of the Year
GT Driver of the year
Touring Car Driver of the year
Indycar Driver of the year
NASCAR Driver of the year
Off Road Driver of the year(WRC, Rally cross, Dakar etc)

Then the two Final threads for:
Rookie of the Year(Can only Apply to Drivers that are making their Debut season to that Class or Catagory).
Driver of the year (Using the winners of the above threads).

Cockiest driver of the era - tie between Lewis Hamilton and Kevin Harvick.

Can I go back in time somewhat and say Alain Menu?

Back in his BTCC days he was always extremely confident in his own abilities but it has to be said, he delivered on that confidence time after time after time.

My vote goes for Shane Van Gizbergen. I'll wait until after Homebush and the Sepang 12 Hour, but so far, his 2016 is shaping up very nicely. Already has a Bathurst 12hr win, BlancPain Endurance title including 2 race wins. If he can add a V8SC title and an international GT title, that would be quite special in my eyes.
