No, I believe they hold the same amount of data. 4.7 GB if I'm not mistaken.
nooooooo. There are 2 basic qualities of DVD's, kind of like ribs. The best ribs, or DVD's, go to the rich restaurants or film companies. For DVD's, the commercial DVD's can store twice as much data as a residential DVD. This is so because of a nice little feature called Layers. You see, commercial DVD's normally are multi-layered. This can be observed in such movies like Gladiator. Gladiator sometimes skips over the best fight scene on PS2's, even if the DVD is perfect, because PS2 has a hard time switching from one layer to another.
Residential DVD's, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD RAM, the most storage they can have typically is 4.7GB. From what I've heard, as well, is that they also must be formatted, so you lose more data because of that.
From what my brother said, however, is that it is possible to burn DVD's. My brother has a friend that makes copies of movies like Lord of the Rings. I'd much rather BUY the movie than copy it, but for backup situations, I see no reason why NOT to burn the DVD, but then again, DVD's cost what, around $10, and you can find many movies on DVD for $10, so it's a tossup for those....
