Dyno testing a AWD vehicle

Yeah - it's the same in Sydney, I think there's only 2 or 3 in town. We can probably thank the popularity of the WRX for there being any at all!

It's like regular dyno testing except they've got to measure power from four wheels.
 
They have 1 lane for AWD/4WD cars at the emissions testing station....I assume that probably the front roller is adjustable and then they use the back wheels or vice versa I haven't seen it in use...then they have free rollers that come up in front and in back of the tires to hold it in place.

That's how the 323 was tested minus 1 roller...

There is one like that, but it is expensive to install in a garage, and even then it may not be used all the time (given that far less than 50% of all vehicles are truly 4WD). There is the DynaPack (http://www.dynapack.com), which is basically portable. Rather than having the car sit on rollers, the car is put on a lift and raised 18-24". All four wheels are removed and four modules are attached to the wheel hubs. Then run the car as you would on a normal Dyno. From what I hear, it's a very good tool, and a lot of new & existing Subaru tuners are using it.

That would give a misleading result, as power transmission losses through to the rear wheels would not be represented.

Do you only have to do emission tests in Saint Louis, or do you have to do it in the whole of Missouri?
 
heh...Then you go right over the river into E-STL (illinois) where there's tons of smog and grime and it's free emissions day every day there...insane.

But it's ok with me...
 
Heh, yeah, East Saint Louis is a pretty tough town. I rate it right up there with Gary, Indiana and sections of Pittsburgh.
