The New Echo Hatchback is the Toyota Vitz. Just renamed.
It's vaguely different, but yeah - just a Vitz.

When you buy die-cast Vitzs, they sell it as the "Toyota Yaris/Vitz/Echo" despite that the Echo has never looked anything like that until now.

PS - Ha, ha Canada - we get Mitsubishi (some gain )! And the Lexus SC300!

Dude, Echo Hatchbacks have been out for about 3 years at least...

Actually, in it's class, the Yaris is pretty damn good. There's much more cabin space than in other cars in the class, and the 1.5RS/Tsport (the same one in GT3) is a rapid warm hatch.

Just don't try to put anything in the boot (trunk, for our colonial friends). Compared to other cars in the class, there just isn't one.

Not here. We've been lucky enough to get the sedan and coupe (which lists for $9,995 or $14,997 of your money) since the '01 model year, I think.

I wish we got the hatches in the US, it might create a new segment.

We get the Mitsubushi in Canada, and the Lexus SC300. ;)

Where do you live? I've lived in three really big cities in the past two years, and I nearly never see them. We're talking about this, right?

We get a few of them down here, but they're imported...:) (The Soarers)

You don't get the Echo hatchbacks in the US? That's the only version of the car worth buying...;)

Yeah - the Septics went off hatchbacks after the Pinto thing - remember that ridiculous 'notchback' Laser we got here -
laserw.jpg
- blame the Yanks for that one. Basically they think if it doesn't have a 'boot' they'll be burnt to death if it gets rear-ended.

Some of our small hatchbacks get better crash test ratings that "bigger" cars.

The new Ford Fiesta, for example. Up to £10,000 of finest 11'5" hatchback - gets a 4 star crash test rating. Compare to a Land Rover Freelander, which fell apart on a 30mph front-end impact - so much so that the driver wouldn't be able to get out, along with being knee-capped by the brake pedal, and neutered by the steering column...

Vat, that Laser sold good as the Escort in the US. As for people getting burned in a rear accident...hey it adds the fun in driving a Ford.

Most Americans think it's a privacy thing - I think hatch sedans could sell just as well as the rest of the Camry, Accord, Passat class but now it's the manufacturers who are afraid to try it, not the people.

If you mean actual hatchbacks, Echo-sized, then you need to realise that the Ford F-series has sold nearly 30 million units and has been the best-selling vehicle for 27 years straight. Believe me - we don't want hatchbacks; we'll take our huge cars, thank you.

PS - the vehicle you posted, the Laser (here the Escort), was followed up by this...

...which turned Americans off to hatchbacks of similar size. It was by far the worst car in the country for the three years it was sold.

The Land Rover Freelander, it was pretty clear from the pictures, was designed about the same time the original Discovery was - modern cars shouldn't do so poorly in front crash-tests. Was the Freelander the one where the roof was mangled and intruded on the passenger compartment? No bother, because here in the US, you'd have to be crazy to buy a Freelander - it's $10k more than similar competition, and it feels like it's ancient.

The new Fiesta is a great car - Unlike Land Rover, Ford probably crash-tested it before putting it on sale.

Whereas in the UK all these idiot women that clog our cities' streets drive them to and from school to pick up/drop off the kids. And they're in a deathtrap... Scary.

The new Fiesta IS a great car. But it's lost some of the driveability of the Mk 4s. It's no coincidence that the Puma, Ka and StreetKa were all based on the Mk 4's chassis. But again, that was designed in 1989..

Doug, that's an Aspire, not an Escort. The Escort was followed by the Focus ZX-5. 1 junker after another.

And as for bigger hatchbacks, Mazda did well with the 626 5 door from ~ '85 to '92. They even had Turbo ones. And people liked em. In Europe and other places they had the Capella/626 5 door all the way up till 2002. And now, soon, there will be a Mazda 6 5 door hatch, in the US too. And I'd rather have the hatch then the sedan. It's more practical.

That car was sold here as the model under the Laser/Escort, the Festiva - it was indeed a bucket of crap. They were actually made by Kia.

Of course, being cheap and backed by a manufacturer with a huge sales presence, they sold a heap of them.

The Laser was replaced by the Focus.
