Want to watch a car accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.785 seconds? A team of university students in Switzerland has designed and built a record-breaking electric race car, and it looks awesome.

Turns out, students are pretty great at building cars. Last month, engineering students from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia set a new world record for the fastest electric vehicle over a distance of 500 kilometres, and now students in Switzerland have broken the world acceleration record using their super-speedy electric race car called ‘Grimsel’.

The team, from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and ETH Zurich, managed to build an electric vehicle that can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.785 seconds in the space of 30 metres.

According to Science Daily, the previous record was 2.134 seconds, set by an electric car built by engineers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.

Built in less than 12 months, the Grimsel electric car weighs just 168 kg and can generate a total torque - the amount of rotational force generated by the engine - of 1630 Nm (Newton metres), which is controlled at each individual wheel for maximised acceleration.

The record was set at a military airfield in Dübendorf ad part of the recent Formula Student international competition at a military airfield in Dübendorf. With more than 500 teams participating, it’s the largest competition in the world for engineers.

Watch the record-breaking moment from the front seat of the car below:

I wish my university's formula student team had the money and connections to industry that those unis do.

Yesterday evening on Discovery or National Geographic, there was a programmme showing the 5 fastest accelerating cars. The fastest car was a Top Fuel dragster and did 0-100km/h in 0.80 seconds.

Maybe it's a world record for the fastest accelerating electric car and not cars in general.

Maybe but the "Grimsel" doesn't seem to be road legal.

Just read the Youtube video information and it is the world record for fastest accelerating electric car.

Ahem...

Of course it's not the fastest car to 60, there are road legal gas powered drag cars that can hit 60 quicker than this formula car.

The thread title says something else.

Electric car breaks acceleration world record |0-100km/h in 1.785sec

You quoted a part of the text that mentioned a world record for the fastest electric vehicle over a distance of 500 kilometres, ...

...a nd now now students in Switzerland have broken the world acceleration record using their super-speedy electric race car called ‘Grimsel’. It doesn't say that it is an acceleration world record for electric cars.

It doesn't say that it's not, either.

It doesn't say that it's not, either.
Exactly. It can go either way but this world record is only for electric cars. The OP and the thread title doesn't specifically say it's a world record by electric cars. The world acceleration record can be electric cars, hydorgen, gasoline cars etc... according the OP and the thread title.

As I said, in this case, it's about electric cars, only the OP and the thread title didn't mention it.

Road legal car, sure.

The Cobra Jet does it in 1.5.

For electric cars, this is definitely a record.

That's very impressive.

Both Zurich and Delft have very, very good Formula SAE/Student teams. They build very well engineered, and advanced cars. They've got traction control, launch control, torque vectoring, and all that fancy stuff.

... and looking at the youtube clip, it looks good as well. The car I mean!
