Engine Sounds

Is it just me or did PD for some reason do a sub-par job with nearly every engine sound in GT besides Rotaries?! I remember playing side by side videos of GT cars in GT and their real counterparts on videos and the rotary especially the 4 rotors sound the most authentic.

Why is that.. am I imagining it though.

Thoughts!?

A lot of the sounds on GT2-3-4 are fairly accurate to their real counterpart (that is, for stock exhaust parts of course), but the way they mixed them, and the equipment they had when recording doesn't do justice to the real models. It's true that the 787B is very good. However, in GT4 they forgot to keep the idle "woop-woop-woop" that was present on GT3.

A few other examples of nice engine renditions are the Mitsubishi FTO on GT2, Toyota Chaser TRD on GT2 and Chaser Tom's on GT4, Cizeta V16T on GT4, Vector M12 on GT2 and GT3 (though unused on that one), Mitsubishi 3000GT on GT2-3... and more i'm sure.

The worst part of sound is the straight cut gears....Alot of the cars that have the straight cut gear sound would not have straight cut gears.

If your talking about road cars having the straight cut gear whine then that's because of the fully customisbale 'box when if you added it. Otherwise the majority of all race cars have that classic straight cut sound because that's just how most race spec 'box's sound if they're using straight cut gears.

Ah okay the whine. Yes any other transmission part than Stock will have the whine added to the sounds the car makes.

Let's talk about one particular car...
The Mercedes-Benz Sauber C9 Race Car.
I only have one way to describe it's engine sound...

Why they never got it even REMOTELY right in any GT game is beyond me.

Who knows.. either the guy that programmed what car uses what sound had no idea, or because they rushed some parts... in any case, a lot of cars share sounds completely because PD doesn't have a recording for every car in the game. Usually around half the cars in the games have a unique sound to them. GT2 has ~295 unique used sounds for 620 cars, GT6 has 619 unique sounds for ~1100 cars. So yeah. Concessions I guess. Although some are very wrong concessions lol

One thing I've always noticed is how a lot cars in GT4 used "new" unique engine sounds just for GT4, before they reverted back to their old engine sounds for GT5, and in some cased GT6.

A few examples examples that spring to mind after playing GT4 the other day are:
  • Loctite Zexel GTR
  • Lister Storm
  • Spoon S2000 (race car)
  • S2000 LM
  • And most of the road going S2000's in general

There are loads of other examples that I've forgotten, but generally it's peculiar how a lot of cars had engine sounds unique to them on GT4 only, for whatever reason, with other example's being the '03 Impreza Rally Car and the 206 Rally Car. Just found it interesting how GT4 seemed to have so many "unique" (though previously used) new engine sounds for many cars, before changing back to their original sound for GT5, for whatever reason. Though PD have played a bit of a "merry-go-round" when it comes to changing the engine sounds cars in the past.

Granted but it's nowhere near as loud as the game makes it. I lower transmission sound to -5.0 and raise engine sound to +5.0 when driving race cars and you get a much better mix in my opinion. The whine is still too loud (for the fact that I lowered it so much I thought it would be even quieter) but the louder engine grunt helps as your ears tend to focus more on that now.

Agreed. PD... no, KAZ never knows what he wants. As shown with GTS today.

Haha too true, good 'ol Kaz eh? It's probably why us GT fans are amongst the most patient (and impatient for that matter) around. We've just grown used to the antics of Kaz and the PD team :sly:.

Fair point. Personally I've never really had an issue with the race transmission whine in GT (GTS is the 1st exception in that regard as I've had to fiddle with the sound balance), as usually been pretty much perfect in that it was never too load compared to the rest of the car's sound. However I've always liked the whine of straight-cut gears so it suits me really . Though I always though GT4's engine sounds were just a tad too quiet, though some cars were quieter than others, but on the flip side others were fine. If anything GT4's engine sounds in general could be a bit inconsistent.
