Engine Swaps

So I was an a car blogging site and came across this post about the upcoming game, Need for Speed: Shift 2. The guy talks about some interesting things such as engine swaps and vintage rims that fans have been asking for. You guys can check it out by clicking the link below.

Veyron engine inside a silvia s13?? I doubt it. I'm going to assume that a 2JZ in an AE86 is possible though(since it was mentioned).

I hope they are somewhat realistic and no drivetrain swaps (that ruined Fm3, IMO)

+1 👍

I am afraid I am going to be even MORE interested in Manufacturer races if engine swaps are enabled. Anyway, just like Works and tuning, we are quickly going to have an acknowledged 'best' combination, like the Works LP640 and ZondaR which everyone will drive if they want to win...

I'd look for things that make racing more even than even MORE upgrades that will favor one car only. With any luck, you won't be able to touch the FIA GT1 cars at ALL other than tuning, and that can be the competitive series we all want (well, SOME of us, anyway!).

Only if the game developers tweak the behind the scenes tuning to get the best power and grip out of the model, though.

I always felt slightly robbed by Shift, when all the cars, pretty much, could handle MUCH better by some tuning adjustments. Not ADDING upgrades, just tuning the suspension and gear ratios, etc..

Only exception was the Reward Cars, especially the BMW, Porsche and AMR. Those things handled well OOTB. Just wish that the Stock Manufacturer cars did the same.

Adding power and reducing weight is STILL going to mean that users STILL have a lot of work to do when they upgrade those parts, but making it so that driving Manufacturer cars around was MUCH worse in the handling dept. than a tuned version tended to put many off the mode.

Maybe a 'Tuned Manufacturer' mode could be introduced..? And hide the values, so they don't get copied straight away, but at least show us the POTENTIAL each car has...

For me, the Manufacturer Races were always the pinnacle of competition, just like Spec Series racing IRL. It just blows that you have to use a poorly tuned suspension to be able to do it.

That part I blame squarely on Black Box (who I sincerely hope have nothing to do with the game this time). At one point the codebase for Shift had a completely customisable upgrade system, where any data that could possibly be in a car could be changed by an upgrade (either changing the underlying numbers or performing math on them) and you could auto-tune to an extent by creating custom upgrade classes that would change both performance and settings across any number of things.

Only, the UI Black Box developed supported none of this stuff - so not only did they make tuning take about 5x as many clicks and display about 1/20th of the information at a time as the old system, they also ruined the functionality by cramming it into "tier 1 / 2 / 3 / 4" on fixed upgrade paths, and required all upgrades to be custom made at a code level to function, rather than just the existing data parameter names.

Not only that, they then failed to notice that 3 kind of important settings were completely disconnected from the UI (damper upgrade component of suspension upgrades, brake bias, gearbox torque transmission) and simply did not function at any level. The brake bias bug probably contributed the most of any single thing to Shift's reputation as a drifty, arcade racer - because now the rear brakes were such that pretty much any trail brake turned into a handbrake turn.

I really hope I don't see them on the credits for the sequel. None of the previews have mentioned them so far (DICE/SMS only) which is a good sign.

EA Black Box has nothing to do with this game. The original NFS Shift was developed by Slightly Mad Studios, which I believe, is in the UK. They are also making Shift 2.

Yeah, though Black Box were also not mentioned at all in promo materials for Shift 1, yet they're all over the credits for the UI :)
