Picked this up the day it came out - pretty damn impressive.

The best bit is, you can skip the scenes with Anakin and Padme - it's a much better film without them!

A warning to those with big subwoofers in their sound systems - the big battle sequence between the droid and clone armies will probably loosen the foundations of your house.

I just bought it yesterday and the movie is twice as good if you skip the parts with Anakin and Padme. At best buy, they were selling them for 20 dollars so it wasn't that expensive. The sequence with the droid and clone armies actually did loosen the screws in the wooden thing (loss of words) that holds the entertainment center.

OA

Whoa...either I have very sensitive hearing, or you guys have the volume turned up a little too high! I can't say I've ever listened to anything that loud!

I didn't really care for the movie at the show. I think I'll rent it to see if the movie is better with out Ankan and Padema.

No, you just don't have a big enough sub. Low frequencies are perceived in the bones, not by the eardrums. :)

Exactly - subs are about feeling, not hearing.

Love that 'Kif' avatar!

Ehh...

So, i have read the book. Should i rent it?

Did you see it at the cinema?

I forgot the film was shot digitally - I was looking at it last night thinking 'gee whiz this is a clean transfer'...<slap of forehead>

I bought it too at Best Buy for 15.99 mostly because I wanted to see how it looked being completely digital from concept to DVD. It definitely is an impressive picture, although it isn't the first DVD feature film taken directly from the digital source (as they claim on TV)
Mostly I bought it because it was so cheap, and LOTR was on sale too. :)

I was discussing this last week - this is a good debate for definitions. I think it is the first film shot digitally put to DVD, but I think either Antz or It's a Bugs had the actual code downloaded to DVD - so again there was no film transfer.

My feeling exactly. And you are right, this is the first feature film shot in digital format. I'd also think that Shrek, Toy story 2, Monsters Inc, and Ice age are also direct from digital. (All of those follow your idea too obviously)
Where I deverge is in Fantasia 2000 by Disney. I believe that this movie was part CGI, and part cell animation shot digitally into the IMAX format. I also believe that this was direct from digital , so where would that fall?
So I'm still left believing that Lucas is bending the truth.

I thought the WHOLE movie was very impressive. While the scenes with Anakin and Amadala were syrupy, and somewhat overdone. (and why is SENATOR Amadala dressing so provocatively, and protesting that she can't be in love...Don't show the goods if you don't want someone to bid on them).

I also believe that those scenes were neccesary to build a picture of the relationship between Anakin and Amadala. It will help show how FAR Anakin fell to the dark side.

Heheheheheheheheeee....

Yeah, but it would have been nice if they were executed a little better....

I agree they were necessary - they were just dreadfully written and awfully acted.

Only because they both went to the William Shatner acting school of over acting.

I think a lot of them claim to be a complete digital transfer, but the one that's telling the truth is, as far as I am aware, A Bug's Life.

Indeed, the DVD of that is double-sided, with 2.35:1 on one side and 4:3 on the other side, with the whole thing recoded.

 how could you skip them? :reallyodd

I just rented it having never seen the movie before and those scenes weren't bad.

It was easy - I just pressed the little button on the DVD remote....

Seriously though - Uh, yeah, they were that bad. George Lucas couldn't write his way out of a wet paper bag, and the actors were awful - Portman is capable of a lot better, but that young fellow that played Annakin was dreadful through the whole film - wooden, flat delivery, urgh.

It was a bit of a shame, as those scenes really knocked the edge off the film - the political development and arms build up were quite well done - did anyone not have hair go up on the back of their neck during the penultimate sequence, with the Imperial theme playing and the massive army boarding the starcruisers? I am really looking forward to the war sequences in Ep III, they should be enormous.

...and after all, isn't that what Star Wars is all about? Giant ships, flying through space, blowing each other up? Ahh....

 that would be why its called star WARS...

i just liked looking at Portman in those scenes. :p

Anyway, yes the Imperial theme playing and the massive army boarding the starcruisers was quite hair-raising. Also having Yoda do somthing besides limp around and talk backwards was quite cool. :D

Anyway, I'm hoping Ep 3 won't be another Ep 1..

I picked up Episode II today for Christmas.

It was spoilt in the cinema so I presume it'll be a lot better.

I also got Spider-Man :D
