Once again, a Chilean team was crowned champion of the Evolution category, the main one of the Atacama Solar Race, which groups vehicles that move powered only by the Sun's energy.
This time, the title went to the Solar Kan team, from the University of Concepción, who with their AntuNekul 2S vehicle managed to snatch the advantage that, during much of the competition, the Italian team Onda Solare and their Emilia 3 had.
The competition, which culminated yesterday with the awarding of the winners, is not defined by who arrives first, but by the greatest number of kilometers traveled with the exclusive use of solar energy. The AntuNekul 2S completed 1,736 kilometers of the 2,300 that the organization established as a challenge, while the Emilia 3 only managed to cover 1,674.
Although the Italian vehicle had an advantage over the Chilean, it could not reach one of the checkpoints before closing time. If this happens, the vehicle must be towed to the next point, without counting its kilometers traveled in the general table. Emilia arrived 22 minutes after the deadline for the first control of the last stage (Antofagasta-Pozo Almonte) and was penalized. The third in competition was Apolo 3, from the University of Santiago, which traveled 808 kilometers.
"We have been in all the editions since 2012 and, in particular, this was the most difficult race", acknowledges Gabriel Martínez, project manager and founder of the winning team. This is how on day 1 they could not finish the first stage, since the load did not reach them. As if that were not enough, they stole, from one of the team's vehicles, the computer where all the route planning and strategy were located, so they had to rewrite the software. "We were completely demoralized," he recalls. On the second day things improved and they managed to catch up with the Usach team, but it was only after the rest day, during which they managed to fully recharge the vehicle, that the situation improved. "It was epic, as we finished the race with practically zero percent battery power, we minimized consumption."
In the hybrid category, the title went to the Bolivia team and its Inti-2 vehicle. As he won the first two stages of the five considered, he was ahead of Solar UDP, which rebounded in the final three days, but did not manage to complete enough kilometers.
