well, that dude had a cool idea, and I bet NO ONE would consider THIS mercedes to be a rival of ANY kind. sleeper of the year.

You're kidding - I love that model SL - clean, simple lines.

I'm not fussed by the red paint on the wheels, and the roll bar could perhaps have been better done, but otherwise, great conversion. I love the red interior!

even if its a sleeper, i'd be embarrased to drive around town with that thing.

In standard trim it produces 250 hp @ 4400 rpm and a massive torque of 500 Nm @ 2800 rpm.

The engine itself hasn't been modified, apart from the new exhaust headers, so its specifications are pretty much standard.

Not much of a sleeper...

That's roughly 370lb-ft, but with only 250 hp... in 3000 lbs of car. Which means, theorically, that it's marginally faster than a current Mustang GT. Like i said, not exactly a sleeper.

That motor ran 14.5 standing quarters in the 3,800 pound 380SL.

250Hp out of a 6.3 litre V8 is a bit piss poor, when was this engine build/used/designed?

Late 60's - it appeared in the 6.3 litre version of the 380SEL (the period's equivalent of the S-Class) in 1970. Given the weight of the car it was designed for, it was tuned for low down grunt, hence the pretty impressive torque figure of 500Nm. As comparison, the Gen III as used by Holden produces 465Nm from its 5.7 litres.

Which means that it could do high 13s, low 14s in that SL... Which i still don't consider to be much of a sleeper.

That, however, is more like it. Roughly 3000 lbs too, but well over 500 hp at the wheels. And street legal!

Sleepers are cars that make insane amounts of power, while looking stealthy... If it had a 600+hp, twin turbo V12 tuned by Brabus, it'd be a sleeper... now it's just a marginally fast roadster. To me at least

Okay - we're talking definitional differences here. I'd be very surprised to see a '68 SL run a sub 14 second standard quarter, so that in my book would make it a sleeper.

The prospect of 600+hp in that car qualifies as...insane.

c'mon! that car in your link is just a street legal race car. not really a sleeper just a race car without all the stickers.

seems that your book and mine are the very same. id be really impressed when one of those blew a mustang off, using a 60's mercedes engine. and as it looks plain jane, it is a sleeper to me. and it is even cooler given the fact that its not a car you see done up.. er, well... never O_o and Im talking about any japanese/american car, like the one posted by punk rock. yeah, it is a sleeper to hell, but you see sleepy japanese cars all the time (it is an eagle... come on, its a mitsu :P) .same for american cars... but, a 60's mercedes? with a, can we say, "big block mercedes" trabsplant? weee!!
