The new issue of Evo magazine have a three page feature on GT4, focusing almost entirely on the Nurburgring and discussing the games level of accuracy, can the 6min 11sec Stefan Bellof record be beaten and why we can drive quicker in a game than in reality.

The autour of the piece (Richard Meaden) has driven on the 'ring many times and its interesting to hear from someone who is able to directly compare the real thing to the GT4 version.

I have scanned the article and put the large versions in My Gallery (link at the bottom of my post), smaller shots are attached to this post.

Now all we need is a similair piece from Phil Bennett (set the Production car record in a Radical SR3T, until a Donkevort snatched it back), I've seen someone on here who has hinted that he is Phil Bennett.

If it is you, step up to the plate and give us a good write-up, if you have the time.

Everyone, I was able to read at least the last page of the article by zooming in on the image. I think it's a great article. The gist of it is we can beat the real time Nurburgring lap times because we can't die in the game. There is no way any sane person would try to drive the way we drive in GT4 to beat real time lap times on real tracks in real life. If any of us had the chance to drive a Sauber at 200mph, most of us would likely kill ourselves unless you were a trained race car driver already.

ok now that i have figured out how to read it and read it .. i must say WOW nice article.. i drove the ring for the first time yesterday in an M3 after only having passed the A and B licenses and with all the driving aids turned off.. OMG i sucked i got a best time of 9:16 on my second lap i went to sleep after that..

going down the final straight at 160+ mph i was holding on to the DFP with white knuckles and sweaty palms! having done a few spins and a few side swipes with the guard rails.. im sure knowing the propper line will definatly take the edge off but catching air in a 60 thousand dollar car that you dream of and love so much and trying to not crash it while going flat out is an amazing experience..

GT4 is like heroin or crack.. im am so addicted to it.. im at work now and i can think of nothing else but when i will come home and play it again!

Yeah, agree with ppith. If there's no real danger, why not push it to the max?

Damn, I wish they sell Evo stateside...
have you looked in any big book stores? i try to buy the new one when I see them. barnes and noble and also books-a-million has it. maybe some others.

maybe i'm blind but i dont see the 'gallery' link any where. wtf :dunce:

found this too lap records for Nurburgring in GT4 :dopey: 4'59.112?!?!?!?!

Wow.. great article!

Thanks for posting it. Truly inspiring, I did not know who Stefan was or about his record but after reading this, he reminds me of Joey Dunlop. I have been racing for almost three days straight, but now I must go attempt to take my life at the ring. :nervous: :)

I'm 95% certain that Phil Bennett did stop in and post. I doubt we'll hear back from him, but it'd nice.

AO

Sabine one of the taxi drivers of the ring managed 9 mins 36 in a jaguar 2.7 litre diesel twin turbo and jeremey clarkson managed 9 mins 59.

It reminds me of the guy that was the best in some rally video game. Subaru put him in one of their real cars on a real track and he flipped the car.

 If I drove my car, like I drive in Gran Turismo, I'd flip over too.

Great article. I remember reading something similar in either Car & Driver or Motor Trend where thay talked about how close the the lap times from the game and the real life fuji speedway were very close.

OT but Phil Bennett with be racing in the Le Mans Endurance series this year and should be doing three rounds in the American LeMans series, if any of you have a chance to see him race, go for it, an excellent driver and always entertaining.

He does post on the Pistonheads site on an irregular basis, so fingers crossed he will be back.

Wow, sub 5 minutes is mind boggling!

Thanks for the article, that was a good read. 👍

Not a problem, its an excellently writen piece, as is almost always the case for Evo. By far and away the best car magazine available, in my opinion. Supurb writing and photography.

I enjoy evo as well, one of those magazines which use huge photos layed out across the pages. I hate articles with small pics and text all over the place

I'm going to add a link to this article to the Look Here Before You Ask thread you'll find on the top of the GT4 forum.

Thanks, Scaff!
