Evolve Stage 2
Turtle Rock Studios
2K Games

Steam: July 7 2016
Consoles: Coming Soon

Evolve is a 4v1 multiplayer game which pits four human Hunters against one of several Monsters. The Hunters' objective is to take down the Monster, or stall it for 20 minutes. The Monster's objective is to kill all the Hunters, or defend/attack a certain objective depending on the mode.

Evolve has been completely overhauled on PC with new game design, gameplay mechanics, and improved gameplay balance and system performance. All of the content in Evolve, including all the content released following its launch, is unlockable in Evolve Stage 2completely free simply by playing the game.

The Changes

4v1 – four hunters vs. one monster – is still core to any Evolve match, but much of the hunter, monster, map and mode design has changed, resulting in a vastly improved experience. In other words, Evolve Stage 2 is a whole new beast! Here’s a quick list of some of the more important changes to the game. For the full 18-page change list, checkout the full patch notes here.

  • REFINED MODES:
    • HUNT Mode is the focus of the Evolve Stage 2 experience at launch;
    • SPECTATOR Mode can be used by streamers and shoutcasters to broadcast matches.
  • The MOBILE ARENA is now a shared ability that always centers on the Monster, and all four hunter classes have been redesigned to be more easily accessible and have better team synergy even when you’re not playing with friends.
    • TRAPPER – With the mobile arena a shared ability, all Trapper class hunters now come equipped with a PLANET SCANNER ability that tells the hunters generally which direction the monster is located within the map. Trappers also get a speed boost when activating the ability to help them close the distance and Dome the Monster.
    • MEDIC – All Hunter classes now have passive health regeneration that automatically heals players when they aren’t taking damage.
    • SUPPORT – All Support class hunters now have a SHIELD BURST ability that automatically charges the shields of teammates that are close enough to the Support.
    • ASSAULT – All Assault class hunters now have a DEFENSE MATRIX ability that replaces the personal shield’s invulnerability and instead provides damage reduction to the Assault character.
    • MONSTER – All Monsters now have more health and start with enough skill points to activate all four abilities at the start of a match. Alongside new found power and speed, the Monsters are back to terrorize Shear.
  • VISUAL FX and UI have been redesigned to provide a cleaner, more easily understandable experience for players of all skill levels.
  • MAPS have been redesigned specifically for HUNT using countless hours of gameplay data and player feedback since launch, resulting in maps that create consistently fair fights for Hunters and Monsters.

I love this game. I had access to the closed beta a month or so ago. Got an access key from buying X-Com earlier last year, but never got around to installing Evolve until this Saturday. After playing the tutorial, I wasn't really sold on it so I fired up multiplayer expecting to get my butt handed to me, and man did I fall hard for this game. I pre-ordered from GMG with a 23% off coupon this weekend. The closed beta is over now as of today but I can't wait to play the full release.

You hit the nail on the head when you said intense, that's how I described it to my brother when I was telling him about it. The longer you allow the monster to live, the more powerful he becomes and you're against the clock to kill him before the round is over. The game really excels when you get someone that is skilled at playing the monster. It sounds shallow when I say this, but its a glorified hunting game against a very powerful enemy set in the future with futuristic weapons and abilities. The classes are great, even the medic which is usually the class most people hate.

Awesome game, but I wish it was better optimized. My AMD 6870 can't even get above 30FPS on the lowest settings and one step below HD resolution...

In 6 hours of game time I have:
  • Made it to Stage 3 without being found by the Hunters.
  • Killed the entire team as a Stage 1.
  • Won a game where three Hunters somehow managed to down themselves within the first two minutes.
  • Kill one of the highest-ranked Kraken players.
  • Killed a Stage 3 Wraith.

Updated the post with more information. Evolve is now a F2P game on Steam. No purchases are required, and everything in the Beta can be unlocked without needing to purchase the game.

If you purchased Evolve before it went F2P, any hunters and monsters will be carried over without needing to unlock them.

Four hunters and a monster are currently in rotation without needing to unlock them.

I'm glad that there's now people playing the game again, but why did they remove the Evacuation campaign...

They killed their own game with that DLC nonsense. As soon as they said that the entire game was built around DLC, I knew not to purchase it. I hope it's a lesson for all developers.

Real reason Evolve goes into F2P.

(Minor nsfw language, probably.)
Turtle Rock's recognized the DLC "**** storm" (their words) as one of the major contributors to the low player count. F2P helps as it means more people can play it, and (as of right now) is completely free. No microtransactions at all currently.
