Just wanted to know if anyone here had ever been the EAA fly in at Oshkosh Wisconsin. People come from all over the world to see many old and new airplanes. Today, the airshow included hundreds of World War 2 warbirds, including P-51 Mustangs, one of the few remaining B-17 bombers, several Korean war jets, several aerobatic performances, paragliders, simulated combat bombing, a bi-plane with a learjet engine equipped with a wingwalker, and to top it all off, a performance by a Harrier jump jet. Overall it is a great experience and one of the largest airshows in the world. I'll try to get some pictures that i took at the show today so you all can see the various airplanes.
Here's the link to the EAA website-- www.eaa.org

Oh, I wish I could go!

I believe it's the biggest fly-in in the world. Any F/A-22 Raptors on display?

I don't believe there were any on display. And yes this is the biggest fly-in in the world. For the fewe weeks it is on, it is the busiest airport in the world. It's just awesome seeing the variety of planes on display. Also on demonstration was a jet powered semi capabe of 325 mph.

Damn, I wish I would have known you were going. I live in Madsion, so the drive wouldn't be unbearable, I love airplanes, and I'd get to meet a fellow GTP-er. If you're ever going to be in Madison, PM me.

I go to Madison every once in a while. I love the food there. 10 times better than anythng where I live.

I would love to go to an air show. But it is hard to 1)find one near by and 2) to get my dad to take me.
Alot of the larger European air shows are starting to feature the first batch of Eurofighters and I'd love to see one. On a better note I did go to a small air museum yesterday and see a Halifax bomber, Buccaneer and Harrier GR3.

I live near the Fond du Lac area. Only about 10 miles away from the airshow. The planes have been flying over my house. Saw about 3 jet fighters, countless warbirds and many other planes.

I went to the Oshkosh fly-in in about 1974 and '75, with my dad. He was on the US Academy of Model Aeronautics show team. They flew R/C model airplane demonstrations at airshows all over. He had a big biplane (not scale, but approximately 1/4 scale for a medium size biplane) that he used to do aerobatics and skywriting with smoke. He also did a pretend dogfight, flying the Red Baron against an airplane built to look like Snoopie's Flying Doghouse from the old Peanuts comic strip.

Even in '74 there were a ton of cool airplanes there. They were doing STOL demonstrations with a light, unloaded C-5A. It looked like it could take off and land in its own length, with no cargo and a light fuel load. I also saw Bob Hoover and Mary Gaffney and a bunch of other old-school aerobatic pilots do their stuff. Hoover did an amazing routine in a twin-turboprop business plane called the Rockwell Shrike. After a wild routine, he crossed the flightline at about 2000 ft up, killed and feathered both engines, and put the nose down. He then proceeded to do a loop, a hammerhead, a four-point roll, another hammerhead, and then land and coast up to a designated parking spot near the announcer's stand - without ever restarting the engines. He was amazing.

I'd love to get back to Oshkosh in the modern era. I'm sure there are a million new and newly-restored planes to see. Take lots of pictures!

That would have been cool to see the planes of the 70's. Don't think I will be having any pictures up for a while, i lost my compact flash drive and have nothing to transfer them to my computer. And Mike, you really should go, you wont regret it. There is so much stuff to do, and so many well known speakers. Chuck Yeager was there last year and this year i believe even Harrison Ford made an appearance.

Forgot to mention, the B-17 in Mike Rotch's avatar was featured heavily in the warbrid show. It was being covered from above by a pair of P-51's as it made passes above the airfield in a simulated bombing. There were even simulated explosions from the "bombs" it dropped. It was a great sight to see and was a beautifully restored plane.

I stand to be corrected, but the B-17 in my avatar was from the 91st bomber group stationed at Bassingbourn, England. Off the top of my head, no 91st aircraft are operational survivors. The two B-17's used at Oshkosh are either Aluminum Overcast:

Or Fuddy Duddy:

Overcast never saw conflict whilst Fuddy was in the Pacific :)

Here is my website with EAA pictures on it. The movies still play even though their thumbnails don't load. The FTP server went crazy on me while loading the thumbnails. Sorry about how the pictures are thrown together. I quickly did it. I didn't even attatch it to the rest of my website. The pictures are of EAA last year. I didn't go this year even though I could have gone.

Hope you enjoy the pictures

cardude - do the world a favor and edit your posts rather than post 3 short messages in a row. Thanks. There's a button right down in the bottom right that will set you up.

[edit] By the way, some interesting pictures on your site. The "Nazi warbird" is a Junkers Ju-57: basically, the German equivalent of the Ford Trimotor and C-47 Dakota.

I'd love to go to Oshkosh sometime, but Toronto has a great airshow at the ex (it's on the labor day weekend). Some real good aircraft here, in the past I've seen CF-18s (loudest plane I've ever heard), F-15s, F-16s in formation with a P-51, the USAF Thunderbirds, the Red Arrows, and of course, the Snowbirds. Some very rare aircraft have also appeared, an F-117 (I was too young to remember it :( ) and one of two remaining lancasters made an appearence last year (it was being escorted by a spitfire :D ).

This year looks great too, with the regulars like the CF-18, a P-51, a Hawk, and the Snowbirds returning. But some great aircraft that I've never seen in flight will be appearing. F/A-18 Super Hornet, B1B Lancer, T38 Talon, A-10, and what will easily be the highlight for me this year, the mighty F-14 Tomcat .

And on a somewhat off topic note, PBS will be airing a show tonight on the battle between Lockheed and Boeing for the JSF contract.

When are those b-17's from.

Err, they are 'G' Models (chin turrents) so probably were manufactured in mid-late '44 for Fuddy and early '45 for Overcast :)
