extended drift by gear shift?

I think i found a neat little way to extend a drift. I'm not sure if it works with all cars, but i found that if i shift down one gear in the middle of a drift, it will last a little longer (although speed decreases slightly) and you will have more time to steer/countersteer. I did this and did a neat little 4-wheel complete-sideways drift. does anybody know what exactly happens (mechanical-wise) when u shift down a gear during a drift?
 
the tires automatically start spinning faster as the rpm's have increased, so it spins yur tires more and allows you to throw yur tail out in the middle of a turn (if the car is powerful enough). ive found that in gt3, if you upshift while in the middle of a drift and stomp the gas and hold it in, itll give you the same effect as downshifting. only difference is that if you downshift and hold the gas down for too long in that gear, yur car will gain grip again cuz its at the top of the gear and the wheels arent accelerating at all.
 
yeah u are right . both of us not sure true or not never use manual both are auto ...that was shamed
btw manual its great if u are master it ...:P :P
 
yeah i always use manual, i just dont like the feel of the auto =[

xport should have a file converting tool too =[
 
for automatic users, hold "gear shift" while drifting and it'll stay in the gear that you're in. EX: if you enter the turn in 3rd, hold the "shift button" and gun the gas. when you redline, you won't go into 4th but stay in 3rd. neat little thing i found on my wheel when messign around. (havn't tried on controller only on wheel)
 
generally, intake manifolds are tuned to make the peak power of the engine at redline. the closer to the redline you are...the more hp you are making. my dropping down a gear, you raise your hp. this in turn send more power to the wheels..resulting in more spin.

personally i use an auto for drift...i would rather concentrate on the angle of the drift than which gear i'm in :D

hey, i have an xport. attach some of ur replays ^_^. i'll do likewise if i find the time...or maybe i'll make videos with my new digital cam ^_^
 
a funny lil replay
the thing happens on lap 12....Laguna Seca =P (roughly 11 min into replay)
i get hit by a car and fly down the corkscrew =P

P.S. uhh there isn't any drifting in this replay..
