One of the reasons I posted this thread was to get people thinking about what it is that makes Gran Turismo fun for them. Judging by many of the posts in these forums in the run up to GT6 the impression I got was that so many people thought it was life & death to get better graphics and sound. Do people think GT6 is rubbish because the shadows are awful, or the exhaust doesn't sound realistic enough?
Being an old fart I remember my favourite 80s racing game and early 90s racing games and nobody bought them because they looked or sounded realistic, it was all about the feel of the racing. There is a thread about hating the GT6 graphics somewhere, maybe I should post those links on there.
In GT6 we have the night sky mapped out, which is impressive and beautiful, but it doesn’t make the game play any better it just makes it a very, very slightly more immersive experience. Similarly, I remember the demands on this forum with previous versions for damage modelling, skidmarks, properly animated crowds and so on, all of which arrived don’t make the game play any better. The same with premium and standard, the cockpit view is great, but if its not there and blacked out it is not a big loss in my opinion as I can still drive and focus on the road with the same viewpoint but without the peripheral detail.
The first car I bought on one of my profiles was an old Mini which is a standard. Watching the replay and looking at the detailing, you can see the improvement between GT3/4 and GT5/6 but driving the car was just as fantastic as I expected and really got me into GT6 to start with.
In a way I think the masses have got what they deserve with GT6, all these demands for inconsequential details mean that PD has become distracted from what made the earlier games great. The driving is still good, more cars and tracks are good but adding nice-to-haves instead of improving the racing experience with ai, career mode and proper difficulty flexibility has hit the sales figures.
