Hi,

I need some help with a decision. I recently built a PC for games. Which brings me to the question: should I buy F1 2012 for PC or PS3? Are the games developed by Codemasters has more or less bug for PC and do the patch are often released?

Thank you for all the help.

It's a tough one. One thing is for certain, if your PC is decent, you will get better graphics, framerate and likely loading times too on your PC. (Well, the graphics aren't that much better to be honest).

Also it depends whether you own a wheel or if you just have a gamepad. If you don't have a wheel the PS3 version will be more accessible; no having to mess around with drivers for your DS3 in windows.

One big thing you should take into account is online play, especially if you want to play with people here on GTPlanet. Whilst you will be able to find a co-op partner, if you want to play a full online race series you're much better off going with the PS3 as the majority of users here have it for the console.

I'm not certain about bugs and patches as I don't own the PS3 version myself, but I think the bugs are generally the same in both versions.

If you're only going to play single player and you own a wheel, I strongly recommend the PC version.

If you ever decide to upgraded your PC with triple screen then go with PC even if it has a few more bugs. Don't forget PS3 version of F1 2011 was, without a doubt, the worst version which is very strange since F1 2010 sold more on the PS3 than X360 or PC.

If it's a good PC capable of running the game nicely, then I'd suggest you go for the PC version. But you also need to have a wheel or a controller as playing with a keyboard is near impossible.

If you want to play online, I would suggest the PS3 version.

The reason is that the online version of the PC game is plagued by cheating, mostly griphacks (which allow you to drive at twice the normal speed without fear of going off). Although the PS3 version will still have countless rammers and sore losers, it doesn't have cheaters. There is one guy who is notorious in the Codemasters community for cheating, and he uploads all his hacks onto his website, which a lot of people use.

Thank you for the good advise! It really help for my decision. I forgot to mention what my rig is:

i5 2500k 3.1
Asus GTX 550 Ti
8Gb Corsair Blue Vengeane DDR3 1666 MhZ

I have no wheel but planing on buying one... (playing with my PS3 gamepad for the moment). As for my intention of playing online, I normaly focus on my single player career but, from time to time, I enjoy playing with others.

Do you think I can run a smooth game with my rig?

Thank you so much for all the good advise every one!

Wait until the game comes out and read some reviews. Its the best way to go. If you want to pre-order the game, than you have to choose if you want to play a lot of multiplayer( online) or play a lot on your career. If you want to play multiplayer than the PS3 version is the way to go, and if you want to spend a lot of time on your career, than go the PC version, but if I was you, I would be waiting for the game to come out & I would read some reviews before I would choose.:)

I have a similar rig, infact it's the same except with a radeon HD 6850 instead of a 550 Ti. There isn't a great deal of difference between the two so you should be able to run iit at 60fps perhaps just below maximum settings (I know I run mine on high, but Vsync is off and I think AA settings etc. are below the highest for performance).

If you don't have a wheel, it might be a hassle to get the game working properly with the DS3 and it's third party PC drivers. It's something i've never liked, how Sony doesn't have official gamepad drivers for the PC. If you have an Xbox 360 controller laying around somewhere you could possibly use that as it will certainly be compatible, and Microsoft have official drivers for the PC (Think they're built into the OS, not sure).

I'd recommend getting the PS3 version, unless you have a wheel by the time the game is released. It really isn't worth faffing about with the unofficial drivers when it probably won't work as intended anyway.

Another thing to consider is the PC game and the way it works. F1 2011 is tied to Games for Windows Live so if you already have a windows live/msn account, great! But it means if you buy the game through steam you have to first login to steam and then login to GFWL and then wait for the game to load. It's a slight bit of hassle. The PS3 version is almost completely hassle free.

They are...lest not forget the FPS issues the PS3 has.

PS3.

PC is frankly a pain to use even if you know what you're doing.

Uhm no...you don't even know much about PCs to play games nowadays.

While the graphics are a lot better than the PS3 version, I have never had a problem with the frame rate. From what I've read online, its only people playing on TVs bigger than 40" that had frame rate issues on the PS3.

I've had plenty of frame rate issues with my ps3 version. Monaco in particular is a nightmare for the games frame rate. My tv is only a 32-37" (I don't remember which off the top of my head)

Mine is 42" but we had lots of reports from people playing on smaller screens, too.

The one above this post is just another example.

I've only ever seen people using 42" TVs complaining about frame rate. Perhaps it was a problem with 37"+. I have only ever played on a 19" and a 32" and the only frame rate drops I've eve had were in the cut scene before a race (pre patch) but never anything while driving.

I have no issues in F1 2011 with frame rates on the PS3 (24 full HD TV) only when coming out of the pits.
In F1 2010 I had alot of issues with frame rate especially in Monaco (slide show) and in Abu Dhabi (flickering objects especially trees)
The only problem I have with F1 2011 is the terrible Anti aliasing that makes my eyes turn red after 30 minutes of playing it.

Yeah Monaco (swimming pool and final turn) was awful in 2010. I ended up just causing a turn 1 pile up there in career because it was unplayable.

Could you explain to me how is it possible for the size of TV to effect the frame rate?
It does seems PS3 had lower frame rate than X360 version. (Frame rate have improved some after patches.)

I don't know but only people with bigger TVs have had frame rate issues with the game. I have only played the game on 19" and 32" TVs at 1080p and only had frame drops during the pre race cut scene and driving through the pits (both only pre patch), whereas people with TVs larger than 37" have been experiencing more frequent frame drops.

Codemasters delivered a half baked pile of poop for ps3 with f1 2011 with frame rate issues and more.

Since they are building on f1 2011 I assume that 2012 will still not be as good on ps3, and of course for modability as well as performance pc would be better.

Codemasters claim in ISR video that they working hard to improve PS3 version this year. We have to wait and see if they succeed.

The mods available for F1 2011 made it 3x's the game that the original release was. But I really wish I was able to participate with the PS3 members here in online events. Downside is that the PC gaming community is much smaller.
