Fanatec Shifter Gearknob Change [GUIDE]

Hello GTPlanet,
I've been thinking of doing this ever since I got my wheel and a thread on GTP has inspired me to do so.

This is more-less a how to guide, I see that there aren't many guides on modifying a Fanatec shifter so I this thread will help people looking for info.

Need-to-know facts:
- Any universal gear knob will fit to Porsche Wheel Shifter (PWS from now on)
- You will void the warranty of the shifter if you do this
- Original knob was designed to come off easily
- This is an easy mod

1. a) Carefully remove the silver H pattern plastic cover.
- This bit is tricky, you have to be very careful not to damage (break or scratch) the cover, since the plastic used is very brittle
b) Undo the screw under the cover.
- Simple, just undo the screw with Phillips head screwdriver but beware - the seal you're about to damage will void your warranty

2. Undo the screw at the base of the standard knob.
- You'll need a 10mm wrench to do this, tightening/loosening this screw changes the resistance of the shifter so be sure to screw it back in place after you've removed the knob

3. Remove the standard knob.
- Don't forget to put back the base screw in place

4. Mount your desired gear knob.
- PWS's gear lever will hold any universal aftermarket knob

I can say this makes a world of difference, much better than the old knob for sure - as long as you don't expect TH8RS you'll be very pleased with this mod.

If there would just be one thread for Fanatec product modding, this definitely go there. Truly simple and straightforward to the point. :)

Oh yeah I have one question though, when I screw the fittings on my shifter, why does it become loose overtime? Should I really use a lighter shift knob?

Heavy shifter because it is made out of Metal/Aluminum.

Do you polish it yourself or do you have a housekeeper to do it? I think my new knob will be polish free.💡

Has to be himself, otherwise it would be an automatic :).

Energizzer, nice job!
Love the mount, not real keen on the knob style but thats just me.

Nice simple tutorial. And i totally agree, this mod makes the shifter feel entirely different.

VileFCboy, if you cut a 5" aluminum tube that snugly fits over the fanatec shaft and pour "GOOP" IN and place some on the base you have an even more realistic shifter. I highly recommend turning the resistence up before you do this because you're not going to get it off after the mod. :P

Exactly what u did. Found the tension i was looking for and loaded the tube up. I used vinyl window caulking so it is removeable. Not easily, but removeable.

^^^Heh, nice. I didn't want that thing moving so I GOOPED it. It won't come off unless you destroy it. I already have the CSR shifter set as my "shorty" set. And the modded one with Porsche knob as my long throw set. :)

Im probably going to just stick with the regular Fanatec shift knob for now. Since I am concentrating more on reverse mounting my pedals and setting up where to have my H-shifter be at.

Maybe a dumb question, but is "GOOP" like ordinary glue or is it so special superduper american undercover stuff....!! ;):P:cheers:

Hehe, once you go GOOP, you never go back. This stuff is amazing. I've patched mufflers, my home, put together parts for my rig, basically been using this for 15 years. It will stick to anything and once cured is pretty indestructible. :D

find it.

I hope it has nothing to do with the knob polishing he mentioned before 

Here are a couple of pics showing my new gear stick..!
A friend made the stick in a lathe from a piece of aluminum, and the knob is a aftermarket aluminum knob.
Man what a difference in feel, i recomend this to everyone! :)
