I tested some cars for the Grand Canyon. I found that the forward and reverse times turned out to be identical so I'll just post them one way:
Time Handling (low is better)
Ford Escort Rally 2.25 /2.24 4.5 Prize
Mitsu 3000gt VR4 95 2.25 3 At 703 hp, bought SH
Ford RS200 2.26 8 Not recommended
Toyota Raid 2.27 7
Suburu 2.28 1.5
Lancer evo VI 2.28 3 at 503 hp (the higher power TME was slower as the extra power pushed it out of shape on the corners)
Beetle 2.31 2.5 Bought new
Lancer evo VII 2.34 3
Starion 2.38 2
Renault Turbo Unfinished 100 Impossible to drive.
The Ford Escort Rally, I was off line on one corner and the actual fastest time might be a couple of seconds faster. Recommended.
Tactics: get past the AI car in the first 30secs or forget it. It is amazingly difficult to pass the AI aside from at the beginning as it really puts you off your driving on a course where you have to concentrate every second to keep yourself on track. You also have the problem of dust and possibly getting a time penalty via going off your racing line. Basically the Escort races out of the blocks and you are past the AI within the first 10 seconds. Then you just have to keep your time penalties down to one or two per lap. On the medium difficulty setting you can beat the car by 20 - 35 seconds by the end of the race. It also races the snow courses very well. If you get a penalty just sit on the AI racing line and hope it doesn't pass you.
If you have only raced the course a little take the Suburu around with the turbo switched off, you will have time to remember the course and start to set up a good driving rythm.
Basically I power slid through every corner aside from the shicane which drops / rises sharply forward and reverse. Here you change your tactics and try and take a straight line.
The Ford RS 200 may go quicker, but it was hell to try and control, and the average lap time was pretty slow due to penalties.
Each course will have a different fastest car.
