Alright, so I bought a car.

A 1989 Nissan 240SX XE, 5-speed manual, to be exact. One owner, 178,000 miles. Not without its' quirks and issues, but fully functional (apart from the cruise control) and in good working order.

Wasn't originally planning to buy something like this. I wanted a Volvo 240 wagon, but those appear to be one of the hardest things to find in my area in decent condition and for a decent price. This popped up about 3 weeks ago, and after a bit of back and forth with the owner, I went down to take a look at it.

Kinda spoiled the surprise with the pictures, but when I got there, it was sitting in the lot, all innocent... and clean. Untouched. Not a silly sticker or half-assed body modification to be seen - in fact, there's only 2 visible dents (on the trunk) and even then it takes a certain angle to see them.

10421264_455127004634910_9203024963314226329_n.jpg

The first impression of the outside carried on into the inside. Clean, all parts functional, and aside from a missing sun visor and the partly functional cruise control, perfect. Exactly what I had thought wasn't possible, considering once a 'drift kid' gets his hands on one of these, it gets ruined...

But this one wasn't.

After talking with the seller a bit, I'd learned that she was the only owner (purchased the car in Florida in 1989, actually) and it had been regularly maintained at a shop. All the service records were there, all the original brochures (and even reprints of advertisements in Car & Driver, if you can believe it.) All original.

Otherwise, I doubt I would have paid the grand sum of $2,000 for this lovely example of a well-cared-for, one-owner car.

I don't have any plans to turn this into a drift missile or track day car.
At this stage in my life, I'm trying to get through college, so upgrades outside of simple things (and fixing the rust) are out of the question, at least for the time being.
Main goal is to take care of this car, and hopefully it'll take care of me.

What I do want to do with this car, and when I say want to... I mean "3 or more years down the road of life."
I'd like to get an SR20DET for this, since I know that the stock engine will not last forever, despite what I might try to do (and, believe me, I want to keep it living as long as possible.) Also would like to upgrade the suspension and handling, along with the brakes and wheels - I'd love to get a set of GramLights, but that's going to be a bit down the road...

Not a drifter or a track day car, but something I can enjoy driving. I don't want to do any bodykits or anything to the body - other than a possible Silvia front end swap. I guess that Iketani's S13 (or even a JDM-spec S13 Silvia) is a bit of an inspiration for what I'd like to do to this in the future. (Besides sticking it into a guardrail like he did. Don't want to do that.)

Anyway, enjoy the car. Please, don't hesitate to offer any sort of advice - I know quite a few of you GTP members are experienced with restoring a car or cars, and since I plan to do that (with the rust removal and whatnot) I wouldn't mind advice on how to go about doing that.

And, no, this isn't going to be one of those threads where this car turns into a pile of junk. I love it too much already to do anything stupid to it.

Enjoy!

Digital speedo! Car looks clean, good find.

To tell you the truth, I'm not overly fond of the digital speedo that this has. I'd like it to have had a traditional speedo (along with the HUD) but I guess I'll get used to it.

Nice find! I'm glad you're not going to mod it into a drifter or anything like that either. Normally I'd be all over that, but with the car in such a clean original state and only having one owner from new, I think it'd be a waste of a perfectly good car. With all the modded up ones out there now, yours is probably increasing in value!

Let me preface all this by stating that I didn't actually think I'd be buying something like this.
What I was looking for was a Volvo 240 wagon, or something similar, for a first car. I'm a confessed wagon geek, and although I'd found numerous ones for sale, they all had issues.

And the Saab 900 I looked at turned out to be a flipper. Too many issues for the price.

So I decided to wait and bide my time until something interesting (or a 240 wagon) showed their ugly mugs.

However... when this popped up when I was browsing Craigslist about a week ago, though... I had a feeling I should go take a look at it, at the very least.

When I got there, I was immediately struck by how clean it was - the only aftermarket mod that had been done was a performance exhaust, and even then it was done (properly) by a shop rather than a home job.

So I guess I decided to buy this Nissan. It's a 1989 Nissan 240SX XE, 5-speed manual, 178,000 miles, with every single available option (as far as I can tell) excepting the alloy wheels. HUD works, sunroof works, cruise control works, everything works.

After talking with the seller a bit, I'd learned that she was the only owner (purchased the car in Florida in 1989, actually) and it had been regularly maintained at a shop. All the service records were there, all the original brochures (and even reprints of advertisements in Car & Driver, if you can believe it.) All original.

Only minor issues are slight underside rust and around the left rear wheel arch. And, if you think those tires have very thick tread, it's because they do; they're snow tires. Only trim piece missing is the right side (passenger) sun visor.

Clutch has been replaced (back in '07) so that's not an issue.

Plans...
~Fix rust
~Buy 2nd set of wheels, preferably the option alloy ones
~Get GTPlanet sticker
~Get Akina Speed Stars sticker... because Inital D
~Hunt down the aforementioned sun visor

Other than that, I really don't have any plans to turn this into a drift missile or track day car (or anything else, for that matter.) At this stage in my life, I'm trying to get through college, so upgrades outside of simple things are out of the question. Main goal is to take care of this car, and hopefully it'll take care of me.

More pictures will come when I've got the time to post them. (And good ones, not potato phone ones.)

Looks like a forged image, what have you done with the real FE10!!!!

No but seriously not bad for an older car, and I hope it does take care of you and you don't have any issues. But on the off chance you may...SR20DET it up :sly:👍

Only real reason I bought this was because of how clean it actually is. I was worried about insurance costs, which is why I wanted a 240 wagon, but I got a quote for $90/month from USAA - when, ironically, adding me to my dad's del Sol would be about $153/month. (And this is faster than that is.)

The couple I bought it from actually turned down a guy who had wanted to buy it as well because he was going to use it as a parts vehicle. They did ask me what I planned to do to it, and I said all I was going to do was fix the rust and get a 2nd set of wheels so I could have a winter set and a summer set.
Guess they approved of me (and my dad) since they didn't have an issue with us doing a thorough look-through (they even offered to have it put on a lift so we could see the underside better.) Very nice people.

...Doubt it. Don't really want to get into a swap or anything just yet. If I have the car 5 or so years down the road, then I might consider doing things to it over a period of time. Considering I take care of everything I own (and pay for everything myself) I can see it happening once I finish college or somewhere longer down the road.

Other little bits I need to do I forgot to mention;
~Fix the clock to the correct time (at the time of those pictures it was 6:20 PM here, not 10:18...)
~Scrape those stickers off of the bumper
~Reattach the driver's side seat control cover (not electronic, cover just fell off.)

Other little bits I need to do on GTPlanet;
~
Get a name change (shortened to just FE10)

Forgot to mention the A/C doesn't work properly - although it blows cold, it doesn't blow cold well.. but that's what a sunroof is for, innit? Probably just needs a recharge, since it blows heat fine and we've had this problem before.

Nice to hear that, if i was you then i'll properly do the same thing to the car. Hope you'd enjoy it.

Found a picture I forgot to upload yesterday.

I do find it a bit ironic that my front bumper actually is in better shape (at least externally) than the 2nd photo of @motortrend's post... If my knowledge of wheels is correct as well, those would be Enkei RPF1's on the 2nd car.

Another little thing I need: cassette adapter so I can have my music playing while I'm driving. Radio works, I just don't like the radio stations in my area.
Nothing like having the DK jungle theme music playing while driving to work, I guess. (Glad I got that bonus CD for owning both versions of the new Smash Bros...)

Here's a 180sx I used to own, converted it to Sil80. Was a pretty cool car, so much you can do to the S13s.

Planning to take Mako (yes... I know... but it's the name that fit the best...) up to the overlook point about 5 minutes from where I live for a proper photoshoot on Monday.

Will do a proper deep cleaning of the outside/inside for that, and try to get the stickers scraped off by then. Ordered some Akina Speed Stars stickers for the small side windows (god am I going full Initial D retard) and will order a GTPlanet sticker sometime soon as well.

Also looking at a set of wheels for the summer...

Had a chance to clean out Mako today. Won't be doing a full cleaning until Monday, which is also when I'm having her inspected (along with the photoshoot.)

Trunk, water channels around the trunk, taillights, and wheel chocks:

I'm told that these are actually worth a bit of money;

Passenger side sill and door sill (and I know, that speaker looks horrible, but it still works fine);
1511464_457968934350717_8617051114914501882_n.jpg

Driver's side sill and door sill - speaker has no rust here (and I'm parked on the edge of the paved section of the driveway, in case you're wondering);

Just took a dusting cloth and ran over the dash and interior bits - some sticker residue near the A/C controls though.

Shot of the backseats. Potato phone pictures don't do this justice, there's next to no interior wear other than the driver's side seat bolster.

Engine bay, which is still filthy - I'm probably going to take care of that sometime soon, as I figured I wouldn't touch it until we're out of the drought in our area. Did clean the areas around the headlamps though.

And a frontal shot, for good measure (even though I took it at a slight angle... which made it look uneven)

Your dash is in perfect condition! I'm shocked!

Very nice pick up, this is actually my favorite two-tone color offered.

Updated the OP with plans for the (distant) future, along with what I need to do to the car (basic maintenance and whatnot.)

Actually, the dash isn't 100% perfect, in the 5th picture of the above post I made there's a small horizontal crack in the little plastic bit between the airvents above the A/C panel. Just something little to irritate me.

Also, ordered the aforementioned GTPlanet stickers (and the Akina Speed Stars stickers.) They'll go nicely on the little side windows...

Why the swiss sticker? (CH)

Don't know, previous owner had a whole host of stickers on the car. Only ones that haven't come off easily are the 3 on the bumper, as they've nearly become part of it themselves - that's how old/worn they are.

The car will be taken to the fabrication shop Monday to assess the rust issues.

If all goes well (and the rust is worth repairing) then I'll have it done that week.

As it is now... I've got some decisions to make.

First off, the rust. I knew that it was going to be an issue, especially on the frame rails. When I took it to the fabrication shop, I got to see just how bad it was once he put it on the lift - the left frame rail is toast, and the right one is slowly getting there. That's the major issue. There's also a very small floorpan hole on the left side, and because of where it's situated (very close to the left frame rail) the guy told me he'd repair it along with the frame rail for just the cost of the frame rail repair.

The rear bumper has a lot of rot on the left side. Right side isn't so bad.

I also know where the (small) oil leak is now, plus I found I have a rear main seal leak in the transmission - thank god that it's not a FWD car like the del Sol is, since that was a pain in the butt to replace. Most of the front bushings and whatnot need to be replaced. Brake and fuel lines as well.

However... there's not all bad news. There's a guy at the same shop who is a diehard 240 fan, and he said he'd be willing to buy it off of me for the price I paid for the car ($2000.) The question is, do I want to sell it?

...Not really. I'm conflicted, because the interior is immaculate, and all of the mechanical bits work with no issues. It's just that the rust is an issue. And... I love the car.

It really boils down to three options;

1: Sell the car, get what I paid for it, move on.
2: Fix the framerails and floorpan hole, get the car inspected, drive it, and slowly restore it over a period of time - most likely when I'm done with school (I am going through college right now.)
3: Part the car out.

Heck, if I don't know. I do have a (somewhat) decent backup option if I go route 2; the aforementioned del Sol is still alive, and if something happens to the 240 (or I begin taking off panels to blast them) I have a car available.

Anyone have any advice?

If you don't feel like dumping money into the car, I would recommended selling it and get something else.

If you honestly and truly want to keep driving it. I would keep it but be aware, that more problems will most likely occur with it.

But it's definitely worth it haha, 240's are so fun =}.

^Dito, or option one if the guy takes good care of it. All depends on how much money you are willing to throw at the car

Some minor updates to report.

First off, stickers are gone. Found the heat gun, and finally got most of everything off - there's still some residue, and I really don't know how that's going to get off, but for the most part, it's all good.

Second, of the 3 people that have looked at it... they've all been scared off by the frame rail rust. More than likely, if I want to sell it, I need to get those repaired - and, if I'm doing that, I might as well keep the car. Talked that over with my parents, and they're fine with it.

Cost of that (both frame rails completely redone + the floorpan hole) comes to about $700, including the cost of the metal and labor. Don't know if that's over/underpriced, but I do know that it will be done properly and professionally.

Third... the cruise control is working now. My dad's been having to use the car as his car's water pump went, and... he loves the car. He actually went and fixed the cruise control for me, saying 'I don't want to see this car go.'

So I do have someone who wants to see it stay (besides myself.)

It may sound like a stupid idea but my dad used a bit of gasoline to get rid of the residue from stickers, so if you have gasoline on hand you could maybe try that.

Wait, is it "May-ko" or "Ma-koh?"

Aside from that, i never knew that some earlier 240SXes had a rear end similar to that of the Silvia S13. 👍

Mah-ko. The main reason it has that rear end style is because it's the coupe version; similar 240SX's (read; American S13/180SX) of the same year, but the fastback body style has the '180SX' style taillights and trim.

Stickers arrived a looong time ago; haven't put them on because I haven't gotten to do a full wash of the car yet; as it sits, it's got some little green pollen all over it. Lovely.
