Feedback on my new site in progress...

There's too much wasted space. On a 1024x768 screen, maximised window, I can only see as far as Staff in the menu. There's about an inch of unused vertical space between the text-only links at the top of the page, and between the main logo and the v1.0 legend, and then about two inches between the v1.0 and the menu, and another inch between the main logo and the Updates heading.

In short then, it may look ace at 1600x1200, but on a laptop panel, or a 17" monitor set for someone looking after their eyesight, it's too widely spaced, and that's interfering with your ability to put content onto the screen.

In my opinion!

The Intro banner is cool, but its 231 kb in size. I suggest cutting it down. Also, All the text should be aligned next to the menu banner, because a user should not have to scroll to find everything. Other than that, its fairly well executed. I look forward to seeing it when it is complete.

I had another look, from home, and it does look better on a larger screen, but design for your audience, not yourself!

Oh, and another hint: If the page isn't built yet, don't put the link in. There's little that's worse than a 404.

Looks great, but Giles is right, too much wasted space. The Menu font is way too huge. :)

I'm gonna change that image map soon. I just aven't found the time to do it lately. But thanks for the opinions.

And oh yeah, I made this site with Dreamweaver which I've never used before so thats why it kinda sucks. Just wanted to let ya' know!

It loads too slow. You should design it to load something within 5 seconds of the user clicking the link, or the user will get impatient and leave the site.

5 seconds. God man, you think 56Kers will expect a page to load in 5 seconds. I read something that a site should be designed to load in under 30 seconds or the user will get impatient.

ALPHA, go ahead and post...you make the best sites and getting some opinion from you would really help. And it seems that you are more experienced with Dreamweaver, Flash, etc. while I am experienced with regular HTML code.

So help is REALLY appreciated. :)

No, I didn't say the whole page. I said to load something, like the header or a small piece of text.

I have like a fever and just after posting I vomitted. I hadn't eaten breakfast yet so I spewed up my stomach it hurt like hell!

Anyway I will post tomorrow cause I feel a lil disorintated at the mo.

Thanks for the idea of the font. What'd you think of my banner? Or did you not let it load? I made it with 3d Studio Max and encoded it w/ DivX 5.1 or something.

I had just typed up a full review in the reply box and I lost it :irked: :banghead:

My brief review

Very nice design with the navigation flush to the top of the page. What could be improved is the blue from the main image could be used a bit in the design and maybe a bit more orange.

If the site is made a for 800x600 I have attached the maximum dimensions of a site without scrollbars....I got some code and removed them so you have maximum horizontal and verical design space.

The table looks by it's self in high resolutions but you can make a background image that fixes it up with a tile.

Total score of this beta design 65% - I know it is a low score but the site isn't complete so it can't be fully reviewed.

it looks better. It looks like you're still trying to put a banner on the top of the page, which is common and no problem, however, if you put the banner at the top(the one from the bottom), I'd suggest cropping it so the page doesn't scroll at 1024x768, since that's becoming one of, if not the, most popular resolutions.
I'd also change the buttons at the top to rollovers.

I agree with Alpha for the rating. It's incomplete and pretty empty right now, but it's a beta version. I havn't bothered to check the file sizes, I could do that now if I wanted to, but I'm trying to get my TI83+ to work on my 200mhz ME computer(I can't find any TI Connect software for Windows XP and supporting the USB cable!*Grr!*)

141kbs that opening image is. That is more than some of the images on High Res Auto Images.

  • An optimizing tip:
  • Always choose Save for Web and select JPEG
  • Move the slider down to around 80%.
  • So long as you keep it above about 60% your image should look alright as JPEG compression focuses more on optimizations that aren't visible to the human eye.
  • Any lower than 60% and you'll encounter crapness.

I optimized the image to 80% and it looks very clean still and is only 68kb.

Erm..no. I want it to be at the bottom and don't want a top banner. Thanks for the feedback, though. :)

It will be fine if the page is condensed so you don't have to scroll at 1024 x 768....or 800 x 600.....it's up to you in the end.

The design is fairly solid, but the huge logo on the main index is unneccessary since you have it on the entry page. It still is rather large, try getting it under 100 kb. I agree with ALPHA's comments. Its only a beta and a rough build. Keep it up and it will look awesome in no time.

Hmm..I see what you guys are saying. I might change the opener to just a text thingie saying that we're closed. And that pic on index1 is there for testing. I'm going to have a table with news, etc.
