Feeling Let Down (Premature?)

I was ready. From 2016 when GT Sport was supposed to launch I was ready.
Then came "An update on Gran Turismo Sport...." I didn't have to read the update to know they game was delayed. I just felt it. I didn't mind however, because I knew they were doing what they can to release an awesome game, plus they had to fine tune for the PS4 Pro and the PSVR, that's three platforms. So I understood.

I understood and prepared. The New Thrustmaster TGT Wheel, was gonna get that! The PSVR Headset? Was gonna get that too! What about the PS4 Pro? A must buy for GT Sport. I was prepared to go all in to get the what I presumed would be the best racing experience on the planet. I love GT and want Gran Turismo to be where I spend my time and effort.

One year later and I feel let down. As the title states, this is indeed premature in some cases, as the game isn't out yet. My issues? First let me give credit where it is due, PD's graphics department is unbelievable and I know in video and screenshots GT Sport might very well be the best looking Racing Title for some time to come. Tracks, Cars, Livery Editor, Scapes all look top tier and we must applaud them.

Issues:
No Dynamic Weather - I really anticipated dynamic weather and am disappointed due to its absence.
No Dynamic Time of Day - This is also a major disappointment. Endurance races won't be the same without it.
Unconfirmed - No Proper damage model - I haven't seen it, but it could be in the game, but this is PD, so it could very well not be in the game.
RAIN??? -- The game is weeks away and I haven't seen a drop of rain - Please PD - this can't be it - prove me wrong.
No "true" Campaign Mode - The license test and blah blah blah blah, just won't cut it. Sorry! that IS NOT A CAMPAIGN MODE Polyphony Digital. FIX THIS Dammit !!!!

So Where am I right now? A GT obsessed person who bought a PS4 Many years ago primarily FOR Gran Turismo?
I am now looking grudgingly over at Project Cars 2. I am biased so I will say its disappointingly so. And No. Project Cars 2 on a PS4 or Pro isn't where its at currently. I wanted the VR Experience I though PD was going to deliver. What I was expecting GT Sport to be, PC2 on a High End PC looks a lot like it. I don't know If I will make that plunge, High End PC, HTC VIVE, etc, but I'm, seriously considering it. I must say i think Racing games and VR go hand in hand, more so than any other title.

That ends my rant, for now at least, PD still have time to prove me wrong and make me happy. But will they?

Are you asking for a delay?
With the lack of news on the last weeks, i don' exclude a delay, maybe one or two months, with a new beta to cover the gap.

@mr1campbell I had not any hype in 2016 for GT, i played the beta and i became very interested, but when I see the track list I was very disappointed.
Maybe you can buy Project cars that seems to be very rich of contents, and then pass to GT when it's not full priced and bug fixed.

There are many reasons to be pessimistic and doubtful about what GTS will end up delivering. The lack of rainy weather, significant car damage, and VR support (**** 1v1 rally racing; that game mode doesn't exist to me) being shown indicates that those features won't be included in the shipped product. I hope that damage will still make it, since an implementation of it existed in the beta. As for rainy weather and VR: I suppose those features require a lot more hardware resources, and PD is having trouble optimizing that.

I'm going to pre-order the Collector's Edition, but I'll wait a day or so for review scores to get published. If they're mediocre, I'll return the game and enjoy F1 2017 and Project Cars 2 instead.

Hey, don't judge the game before it's released! It's utterly stupid! Wait until it's released! @daan teached me that.

But all jokes aside, just wait when the game's out. If it's gonna disappoint you, then don't buy it. Or do buy it if you really are interested in the Livery Editor and Scapes Mode. Just wait until launch, then make your conclusions. And rain is most likely coming to GT Sport. If fog is coming, then so is rain.

And buying PCars2 is a very good idea! :D

I understand that you are not happy about the lack of the career mode. Nor do I. But pleaseeee, wait until the game is out. Maybe when you'll play online, you'll say: "Who needs a career mode with boring AI, when you can race with real people, who are much better!" ;)
Thing is, they can be inconsistent, and they're much better at ruining your race than the GT AI is.

Issues:
No Dynamic Weather - Im not worried. I prefer driving in the sun.
No Dynamic Time of Day - Im not worried. I prefer driving in the sun.
Unconfirmed - No Proper damage model - Lack of damage has never bothered me. Any damage, is in reality the end of your race. That's not fun at all. If you are that worried, quit the race and start again if you have a prang.
RAIN??? -- Im not worried. I prefer driving in the sun.
No "true" Campaign Mode - This is a problem. The grind is GT. GT is the grind. I feel your pain.

Driving in the sun is not "cool" anymore. So get with the times, man!

However, a lack of GT mode is not that cool. And neither is double posting, which I'm doing a bit too much.

Wait and see how it is. If it doesn't look like there's enough of interest to buy, wait a bit, and see how Polyphany updates it. If it never quite works out hopefully you still have your PS3 and can play GT6.

Personally, I started with GT with 3 and was astonished. Then 4 was even bigger. In anticipation of 5 I bought a PS3 and waited for my preorder collector's edition through the delays. Five turned out to be fairly disappointing, but Polyphany improved it over time, at least until they turned off the servers. I waited a long time to get 6 and only did so when it was heavily discounted, but at least the game--after a plethora of updates--was pretty good. I have not yet bought a PS4; I was waiting to see how GT Sport looks before deciding to buy. (I did get an XBox One S with Forza 6 last month, so I've been playing it and Dirt Rally. I also still have GT6 for my PS3, so I can get my e-speed fix).

So I'm not disappointed nor excited yet. I'm interested and curious on what it'll offer and the direction the company will take, but I'll hold off buying until I see more.

Having been a long time GT/PD gamer, i agree 100%, don't pay attention to the "GT Fair Weather FanBoys," questioning you passion for the game. I played the GT Sport Beta and i was expecting alot more. Kaz and company have bought into the Forza "less is more mentality." My PS4 will be 4yrs old in November and i'm still not racing Gran Turismo, PD's statement that they would leave the GT6 servers on for 16 months or so after the launch of GT Sport was interesting. Where's my Daytona? Indy? Spa and Etc., where's my weather and time of day? So i'll buy the game, and i'm sure many will, but Polyphony Digital's become non-relevant in today's console scene. "Hope," for this series is lacking, the ball is in their court to deliver.

I run laps alone. That's my grind. If I have to grind races to gain credits, I'll be disappointed. We're not in the PS1 and PS2 eras anymore. There are more thing to Gran Turismo than "grinding". Personally, I can't believe (I am not happy) it's a positive associated with the series.

It's the lack of reason that they have to try and innovate.

While others have to prove themselves to stay alive in the competitive market, Gran Turismo gets away with it because... it's Gran Turismo. Names mean everything in this industry, and it's the reason why these games keep flying off the shelves when there's more to be discovered.

It's a game that is so behind the others in term of design and complexity of the game engine itself, but as long as people keep doing this

Nowadays we can judge if a videogame is going to be a disaster by its campaigns of advertising and announcements. Sadly the unique solution to the bad quality of this kind of games is not buying them despite being a supporter of the saga

@Suzumiya's post gets right at the crux of the entire issue. Polyphony doesn't really need to reinvent the wheel in terms of sim racing, because the name has had worth and reverence for the past 20 or so years, and they are one of the few remaining first party studios that Sony can rely on that they haven't shuttered in an attempt to compartmentalize. But the sim racing market has changed significantly in the last console generation, hell, since the release of GT6 in 2013 it's changed a lot. Now there are two worthy challengers in SMS and Kunos, who are proving that they can at the very least hang with the big boys, maybe even surpass them in terms of getting to the heart of what a sim racing consumer wants. It should be noted that the racing game has probably felt the biggest hit out of the utter collapse of the mid level developer and publisher, and that indie studios simply cannot pick up the slack of reviving the genre due to licensing agreements.

Yet here is Gran Turismo, continuing to be the stick in the mud it always is. Somewhat sheltered from the changes in the genre, but at the same time, stagnating badly. And unless GT Sport proves to be the third stinker in a row in terms of critical reception (Certainly won't be in terms of sales, but it won't be the all world beater some people here believe it will be) then Sony will probably continue to give Polyphony the loosest leash possible because of that very close connection between publisher and studio.

But it also makes me wonder about the fans. Granted, this is a mainly GT site, and so the voices for the series will be louder. But some of the stuff here I have seen, mental gymnastics trying to defend the series from the glaring criticisms and problems the series has had since GT5, and maybe even earlier. It's very much a yes man mentality. Sure, Kaz probably reads this site, and has good rapport with Jordan, but what is he looking at *when* he sees the site? He's probably looking for more of the comments and suggestions that pump up his ego and makes him remind himself that he created the sim racing genre as we know it today. Unfortunately for Kaz, the genre he helped build is leaving him far behind.

I mean, come on. It's only natural that Forza, PCARS and Assetto Corsa will be compared to GT. But when I see some people here try to plug their ears and say that everything is hunky dory, that kind of makes me sad. What makes me sadder is seeing posts like this

This doesn't work when the publisher of the game gets easy paydays from the studio, and due to circumstances and a bond of trust between the studio and publisher, little will get done in terms of change.

The grind isn't always a bad thing. It's about choosing the cars you wan't to get the specific races done, making it tough or easy depending on our choice, tuning them up and and moding them to look cool in your garage.

Grinding is being confused with gameplay. Only two GT games have required grinding. GT5 which needed repeat races for leveling requirements and GT PSP which required repeat races to unlock AI levels.

If YOU choose to redo events for any reason not forced on you that is your choice. That is not grinding.

Grinding is required if you want to experience all the best, most expensive cars in the game, in a reasonable time frame. How does one accumulate $10-20million cars without running high paying events competitively?

That isn't forced on you. It is the players choice to do that. Yes, they price the cars too high for the game economy, but it is the players making the choice. That is not grinding. I did the El Capitan endurance race an amazing number of times in GT4. The very expensive prize car you get for that was a side effect. I did it because I loved the race. That's gameplay.

Nothing is forced on you because buying the game and playing it is optional to begin with. But if access to all of the content, especially the primo content, is restricted unless you grind your way through the game then that is, by definition, grinding.

Which is called playing the game. As in gameplay.

Another meaningless term because anything within the game is gameplay. Grinding means to repeat certain events over, and over far beyond the base gameplay, to gain access to content. Both GT5 and GT6 suffered in that regard.

Which is the players CHOICE not FORCED. Forced = Grinding. Anything else = player choice. That is not grinding.

If content is locked behind an unrealistic game economy then that's a different thing. Bad game design.
