Its quite a shame that nobody is really talking about the supply/demand factor let alone how sponsors ultimately determine how athletes is paid. In this case its quite obvious why male soccer players are paid more i.e. not only are their games widely watched/attended, they bring in more sponsorship money to their club/national team.

BTW the whole idea of gender wage gap has not basis in truth.

There are other reasons why womens' soccer is less popular then men's soccer besides gender.

  • Mens' soccer leagues and teams have been around much longer than womens' teams.
  • Usually, mens' games are more exciting to watch.
  • The Womens' World Cup gets less viewers than the regular World Cup because the regular World Cup is older, wider known, more thrilling to watch, and more men watch it than women.
If womens' soccer becomes more popular, than expect to see increases in the athletes' salaries. They don't get paid less simply because of gender.

I wouldn't worry, so far this looks like another of these drive-by threads. The issues don't exist (even though experts in them say they do) because of *insert economic mumbo-jumbo here*.

The team's results compared to the mens' will make little difference to OP, I suspect.

I don't think it's misogynistic to say that women's football, at the professional level at least, is still at a much lower standard than the men's game. I'm aware that I might be wrong & am open to being proved as such but I just don't see a level comparison from a viewers point of view.
It's the only sport I can think of where I've seen a discrepancy like that between genders (i've never seen women's rugby so I can't comment on that but I suspect it might be another sport that has a similar discrepancy).

In tennis, as an example, I would advocate watching the women's game over the men's. Both genders seem to play the sport to a very high standard but the men's game has somewhat been ruined by the players' overwhelming strength which results in different movements around the court & a new "power" feel to the game.
Tennis, of course, has had the pay discrepancy debate going on for a long time.
I can see some justification for the men being payed more because they play longer matches but as a viewer I would say, "make the men only play 3 sets too & drop their prize money to match the women's".
5 sets of men's tennis is unnecessary & boring in my eyes when the women's game has such a strong case at being the better competition to watch.

You beat me to bringing up tennis, I enjoy women's golf as well for similar reasons.

I've never been very into golf but I'm surprised to hear that there's a parallel with tennis. I would have guessed that the intricacies of golf shots are visible to the casual viewer even if the player is powerful. In tennis, power seems to kill the rallies.

The men's game has become very much about power. As for shot making, the men can be better where is the women tend to grind it out, it's almost the same to me. The women have less flair but they just plot along and any amateur male golfer can better relate to them. The men are still more fun to watch for me however.

I'd rather watch men's tennis as well, but the reason I like the female counterparts over other sports is night and day. For instance, have you ever watched the female NBA?
