Hi All, I've got an opportunity to get a Fender M-80 Combo Amp for £80.00. Just wondering if anyone has had some personal experience with this amp as I would like some feedback before I go out and buy it. Got a couple of questions though. How is the amp for metal, will it need a pedal to be run through it to get a metal-style sound? and Where can I buy a footswitch from as the one I plan to buy does not have a footswitch included, could I just buy a normal Fender one of does it have to be a certain type?

Just in case nobody has seen the amplifier before here's a picture, this is not to be confused with the Fender M-80 Chorus Amp.

I haven't used that particular one, but very similar ones. Being a early 90's solid state amp, I would say you can expect sharp/bright tones on the distortion without really having much warmth to it. Those SS models just don't have soul in my opinion. I've owned a few like it but gotten rid of them and the footswitch that it needs should be fairly standard and available at most any fender amp dealer. This particular amp was advertised as being used for heavy metal, but once again, being a fender solid state amp from the 90's is not really ideal in my opinion for heavier stuff. If you were to just run a nice processor through the clean channel, you would likely get a better distortion that the factory settings provide.
If you are looking for an amp specifically for a nice dirty tone, I'd look towards Line 6 or Mesa Boogie if you can pocket the cost. :) Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot mate, appreciate that! I'll definitely look into getting a Line 6. 👍

Thanks mate, just came across a Line 6 Spider II for £100, right time to tell my mother. :D

Oh what a great amp! I use to have that amp but I sold it due to because in need of cash for gas. It had that sick 'crunchy' tone perfect for almost any sort of metal as well as for hardcore. :)

I now have a Peavey Vypyr 15 Watts and it is pretty decent. But not as good as my Line 6 Spider II was. But its all good, I usually play stuff that revolves in E standard now.

Crap, it appears somebody else knew that it was a cracking deal on ebay and they've gone and bought it. :ouch: Back to the drawing board...
