hi, i forgot if i made a thread like this already, (if i did, close the other one down, mods)so here goes:

basically, if you like fire alarms, have a few stories about them, or even own a few(like me), then talk about it here.

i actually own quite a few fire alarm devices. i have a Fire-Lite MS-2 FACP(Fire Alarm Control Panel), a GENTEX Commander 4, a Wheelock WM3T-24-LSM(i think that's the number, i have to check), a Simplex 4903-9418 TrueAlert(which i'm planning on selling, if anyone is interested. by the way, it's the SmartSync version, which means for it to work properly, you'd need a SmartSync module, and they are fsking expensive), and a Simplex 4099-9001 Adressable "T-Bar" Pull Station.

currently all of this is going to be a part of my fire alarm system, except for the TrueAlert, which you can see on YouTube in the next month(hopefully).

Perhaps you need to visit this board, Mr. Grinnell.

Why do I get the idea I'm being gently spammed? And if I'm not, never mind.

umm, yea, already a member, i was just trying to see if there were any FA people here on GTP. by the way, my username on The Schumin Web is 4903-9418.

In uni at the start of the year we would have a fire drill at like 3am and we failed it, everyone got out apart from one guy who slept through it so we all failed.

Then he set it off once blow drying his hair at like 2am for some stupid reason... the hairdryer caught fire or something. The warden said his hair looked pretty as it was!

Then the next time we had are re test I was in the bloody shower when it went off and that was fun going outside in the middle of winter in a towel! At least everyone made sure that guy got out so we didnt fail!

One of the wardens got kicked out of another block in hall because he would set the alarm off everytime he made toast... someone should have taught him to use the damn toaster properly!

I loved the walk of shame when someone comes out with someone they took home / GF is half naked, its well funny.

You're the first fire alarm fan we've had: It doesn't sound like an inexpensive hobby, so I salute your fortitude in something different.

My memories of fire alarms are in college, when at 2am in the morning, resident assistants suddenly have the desire to weed out those sleeping in girls' dormitories after...study sessions. That, and discovering that 35 degrees Fahrenheit at said hour is also unbearable after so much...studying.

Edit: Darn, semi-treed by Robin.

 Oh dear lord, you've just reignited a few neurons that really should have remained dormant :ill:

You have single sex dorms? We had like mixed blocks of about 23 people (its like a house on campus) half girls half boys... the bottom floor has to be boys to stop burgulars! :sly:

Oh and did I mention shared showers :sly: many girls dripping wet in towels walking back to thier rooms...

Have you seen the physical shape of the State of Florida? Case closed...although that was 15 years ago.

I learned to shim the emergency doors just right after that fiasco.

Half naked? Me and my roommate had way more than enough time to stare at each other and figure out what was going on and whether to go outside or not when somebody burned popcorn in the microwave at 1 AM. Surely the girls would have had enough time to get some clothes on before going outside...

I can't wait for a 3 AM fire alarm during a Michigan February though.

The 8AM tests at Aquinas in the 15F weather, snow coming down... Yeah, its just great. Especially when they make you stand out there for 10 minutes when there isn't anyone in the GD school to begin with...

I've had a few early morning fire drills in the Michigan winters up at school. Kinda fun sitting outside in jeans and a jacket...with sandels...in the wind...oh well!

also, in conjunction with own a whole bunch of fire alarm stuff, i also work for a local fire alarm company(and strangely they said if i said there name on here, i'd be fired, and then later banned, so, sorry, no more info on their name), and that is sometimes a living h3ll(had to use l33t, sorry). anyone ever had an aluminum bell go off in your ear? oooohhh, that's fun! louder than freaking steel bells!! also, those older electromechanical horns? the ones made by Federal Signal will really start to get to you! also, later today, i had to install and test about 30-40 aluminum bells, which was pure evil. thankfully, i had the easy job: signal installation. panel installation is mucho harder, as in you have to wire up the whole panel onsite. i installed a small one, the big brother to my Fire-Lite MS-2, the MS-4. 4 words: pain. in. the. @$$. initiation device installation is a little harder, as in there are supervised circuits for some 4-wire smoke detectors, and also if i bring the wrong pullstation from the warehouse, like an adressable one, and the panel is non-adressable, then it won't work, the panel will always be in trouble, every device in that zone will not work.

also, if anyone needs any details on how a fire alarm system works, either PM me, or just leave a reply here. i'm still a rookie at my job, but i have a few friends back at The Schumin Web to help me out. also, don't go there for help if you don't want to hear it five different ways of which only one you just barely understand. just ask me, i know more than enough to help you out with turning off a fire alarm system, or setting it off without pulling it.

I'm the Floor Warden for my floor at work - it's my responsibility to make sure everyone gets out without catching on fire.

I hate the fire alarm.

Was working on the air conditioning at the local hospital once, was taking a trolley of rubbish to a skip, tootled around the corner and broke the face off a fire alarm with a trolley. No sounds, so I sat it on a nearby ledge so I could get the trolley out of the way (down the elevator, as it was blocking the corridor), then return and fix the alarm. About 2 minutes later, I returned, sans trolley, to see the entire floor of the hospital evacuated and full of firemen. Delayed action alarm, you see.

Got a bit of a pasting from the boss for that one.

Simplex, do you have a girlfriend? If not, you could totally use your job to pull chicks.

"I work with and collect fire alarms. They might come in handy with you because you're so hot."

OOOOOOOOOOH! Drop that and watch 'em all come out. BLAOW!

I can see why you're single.

I can't believe I laughed at that.

replies to people here:

to Spock:
yes, you read right, Fire Alarm Fans.
to CDailey:
same here bro, except i like the Federal Signal Model 2T a LOT better. sounds more like the ones in the old WWII movies :)
to spauldj3800:
lol, that's happened to me too, i slipped in the mall nea me once and i hit my head on a pullstation, and one, freaked out the people who saw me fall, and then the population of the mall a few seconds later as i heard: "*3 slow whoops* attention, may i have your attention please. a fire has been reported in the building. please exit the building. in. a. orderly manner. do not use the elevators." and thought "i'm fscked for this if anyone finds out!!"

also, yes, Fire Alarm voice evacuation systems have bad grammar.

After 14 years of the British education I react to the "ringing bell" noise everytime as if it's a fire alarm. Which is a bugger because in work it's the delivery alarm so every few hours I twitch at the sound and look to the nearest fire exit!

???

i somehow feel that people are starting to go off-topic, and then I'M always the one to bring it back on-topic... anyway! you know how most fire alarms are flame resistant? well, some companies claim that, but then, there's this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/danieln/260354314/

pretty sick, huh? i've actually seen this thing in person, and DAAAYYYYUMMNN!!! it is ugly as hell! i can't believe the place that had this thing hasn't taken it down yet!!

I like fire alarms during school. They get me out of the boring classroom for at least a few minutes. I wouldn't say I'm a "fan" of fire alarms. But they have saved me from having to do a presentation that I wasn't ready for. BTW I got a B on that presentation the next day.:sly:

Don't fire alarms work my medium of Alpha radiation? alpha particles are absorbs by air but becasue the source and detector are so close together the detector the radiation will reach the detector when air is present but when something denser than air E.g smoke passes between the source and detector the alpha radiation is absorbed and therefore no radiation is detected at the detector braking the circuit and signaling the alarm. At least thats how I think they work, am I correct?

err... close, but not really. most are 4-wire smokes that have power supplied to them, amd when something is wrong, the detector will send a pulse down the "zone wires" to the panel, and the panel will go into alarm. with 2-wires, the detector will swap polarities, thus making a small short-circuit, and sending the panel into alarm. the same thing happens with pull stations(or callpoints in Europe and the UK), the polarities get reversed. the pull station/callpoint is basically a resistor with an ON-OFF switch. once "turned off" the panel will realize someone hit the switch, because there will also be another small short-circuit, and the panel will go into alarm.

any other questions?
