I finally got a wheel again a couple of days ago, a G29, and have been using the time I have to practice and get used to it. I used to race with the G25 back in GT5 and GT6, but it's been a while and I'm still getting used to a wheel again.
Last night I decided to take the plunge and do a Sport Mode race with the wheel. I went for the Gr.3 10 lap race at Yamagiwa. My car of choice was the Mustang. I don't tend to choose a car based on the leaderboards, but more so just what I'm feeling like driving at the time. I raced with all aids off except ABS on "weak".
I decide to quickly set a lap with the DS4 first and then spent a considerable time in the qualifying before entering for the next race, as I wanted to at least match my DS4 lap with the wheel before entering.
I managed to do just that. No super lap, a 1:36.028. I am a high DR.C (est. 95% progress to DR.B) and a SR.B, and that lap landed me in 14th place out of 20 drivers, however may the record hold that most of the field were DR.B drivers (mostly in 911's). I assume I'm matched with them since I'm on the verge of graduating to DR.B.
Anyway, I was worried about all the traffic as I'm not used to starting so far back, but race starts and it's alot of fun! I manage to gain a position and spent most of the 10 laps in 13th place in a hard battle with the guys in 12th and 11th. It was good clean racing and I was having a blast. Unfortunately I get rear ended in the 8th lap resulting in going off course and falling to 15th place. I was quite pissed but held on to my anger and just kept racing. Before the end the guy who rear ended me made a driver error under pressure from me and I get back 14th place and held it until the end.
Afterwards I checked the replay of the incident and that guy actually was innocent. A guy behind him braked too late and hit him in the back, throwing him on my back. Didn't seem like any intention, just a racing incident.
Overall a very clean race and probably one of the most fun races I've done, despite finishing far back and dropping slightly in DR. However I get a nice blue DR.B post race and believe I'm close to advancing to DR.A.
Of course I would've liked to finish higher. Maybe the Mustang was not a wise choice for this race scenario? Maybe I just simply wasn't fast enough for the crowd I was racing with? Maybe a bit of both. I was setting consistant laptimes of 1:39.xxx throughout the race, quite a bit slower then my best QF lap and 7-8sec slower than the top 10 laps. But using the wheel is so much more fun and immersive, while being more consistant. I still need to practice loads more to take better advantage of it but I'm so glad to be back with a wheel!
I'll end my rambling here, happy racing to all !
