Flashing Red Light after reaching Lvl 40 on B-Spec

It just happened! My G25 died two weeks ago so I was stuck with playing B-Spec. My PS3 was on and playing B-Spec for the past 10 days or so. Reached Lvl 40 and completed Endurance series and got a lovely 2007 Ferrari F1. Went to start an Endurance Indy race and off to dinner. Came back and saw flashing red light on PS3 and the screen was off. The worst part was...for some stupid reason, I haven't backed up my PS3!!!

Now, I got a new 320G PS3 Slim. Trying to find a way to transfer the data on the dead PS3's HD to the new PS3. But it seems to me I can't do that unless I somehow got the dead PS3 working again and do the data transfer between two PS3 via Ethernet connection. Tried the famous "YLOD fix" and "Hair Dryer" treatments but didn't work.

Looks like I would start the whole thing again when my Fanatec GT2 arrives...damn, GT5 is definitely an expensive game for me.:ill:

you can take the hdd of your old ps3 and copy the data on it with you pc on the hdd of the new one. its the same procedure as change hdd into a bigger one. there are hundreds of guids how to do it :D

hopefully this will help you ^^

(at least your able to save your gt5 savegame ;D)

Any idea what is wrong with your PS3.

A hard disk is a hard disk.
So if nothing is wrong with the old hard disk, you will be able to take it out, put it in some kind of reader and recuperate the data.

Never tried this, but suspect that the disk uses a normal format and can be read easily.
At the worst you need a PS3 to read it.

You can find some tips here: PS3 HDD Upgrade Tutorial(now includes PS3 Slim!)

PC can read PS3 formatted HD?

I tried google this subject but could not find anything. People said the HD is "locked" to your specific PS3. I was thinking about cloning the HDs on PC but not sure if PC can read PS3 formatted HD. Any links or guide to do it would be appreciated.

I had tried putting the old PS3 HD into the new PS3 but got a msg saying the HD is not supported and can't be used with this PS3 and needed to be reformatted. In other words, I need to wipe the old HD and reformat it if I want to use it on the new PS3 Slim.

As you can upgrade the HDD yourself with any PC HDD that has the right specs, I assume that this works the other way around. Can you take out your old hard drive and hook it up to your PC as a second hard drive and copy all GT5 files to a big usb stick and put it in your new slim ps3.

I dont actually know what im talking about, just using some common sense. Can some one comform that this is possible or not???

Well, I'm running Win 7 x64 here and my PC can't read the old PS3 HD. PC can detect the HD when I hooked it up but it just couldn't read any data from it...meaning it can not mount the HD and assign a drive letter to it.

you are screw the only way is to fix the ps3 then make a backup the HDD is encrypted no program no computer can read that disc and no u cant put the hdd in a new ps3 is going directly to format ... so just fix it and then sell it

Man, that sucks. I can't believe you never backed it up even once though! That's a crap ton of hours you put on that thing!

Yeah...that's stupid of me for not backing it up.

The only thing I want to get back from the old PS3 HD is the GT5 saves. I unlocked some nice cars reaching Lvl 40 on B-Spec and never got a chance to try them after my G25 was dead.:ouch:

You can just take out your old PS3 HDD and do some computers magic on it and recover your data.
It should be a simple process and PCs CAN read fat32.

Probably the easiest thing would be to replace the slim HDD with the old phat HDD.

Bob was probably pissed after all the grinding you made him do and broke your PS3. He is not your slave. Speaking of slaves, I have to go check on my Bob. He is doing a 9 hour enduro.

I don't think the PS3 HD is FAT32...

It is fat32 but of course PC can read it. i dont know why you are posting false information civicinlake.

How are you trying to hook it up ?

When a HDD is fitted to a PS3 the console encrypts it, meaning that any attempt to read it will a PC is not going to work (this has been discussed here a number of times).

Its a basic security measure, otherwise you could just copy anything you liked from drive to drive.

In future I would suggest being careful of throwing accusations of false information at other members, particularly when the info you are posting yourself is no more accurate.

A PC can't just 'read' a PS3 formatted HDD.

Oh and stop double posting guys, I've merged your posts this time, but please use the multi-quote or edit tools in future.

the ps3 hdd is formatted in fat32 and your pc reads NTFS
Pcs do indeed use NTFS on the newer OSs but they also can use Fat 32 and Fat 16. as well, older OSs such as Windows 9x and ME can not read NTFS but all of them work with Fat32

Maybe I have misread something but i am sure that a PC will read Fat32 since most of my USB are Fat32 and they have no problems.

I believe I'm stuck...

Century USB/eSATA HD dock...

I wish i could help you but im unwell at the moment and i cant think straight but I am sure someone with the proper knowledge will be along soon enough to sort out this mess because I do believe if your hard drive still works then recovering the data from it should be a piece of cake

Will you please stop saying this.

It is not a piece of cake at all.

When a HDD is fitted to a PS3 it forces a format and sets up encryption on the drive, once that done a PC will not be able to read or even see the data on it.

Alright, so my ps3's 80gb hard drive which I now have sitting in a HDD enclosure is useless to me ? I was going to use it as an external HDD but the very fact that it has come from PS3 means it is encrypted and I cannot use it as such ?

I really wish there was a solution to the OP's problem but i think he may have hit it already with "Have to find a fix for the ps3 that died".

You can surely still use that old hdd. You have it in an enclosure right ? Just hook it up to your pc, format it, et voila, a clean hdd.

The only way to get the save files from that hdd is to put it in the same ps3 from which it came out. Try and put it in an other ps3 and it will be formatted.

Nope - I didn't say that.

I said that you couldn't read the PS3 files from the HDD.

You can reuse the HDD, but you will need to format it with the PC first, which will of course wipe the PS3 data, but it will be fine to use once that's done.

Will call my local Sony service center about the repair...if they charge too much, I will just take it as a lesson learned and redo the game from start once my new wheel arrives.

I guess noone wants to mention this, but isn't the new PS3 hack about getting into the PS3 and copying game saves (possibly entire system) files?

Maybe that could be your answer.

And by no means am I an advocate for hacking the PS3, I'm just putting it out there as a possible solution.

I had a similar problem with one of my PS3's I didn't want to send it to sony (was after the warranty) because I wouldn't get the data back from them. They don't fix the PS3 & send it back to you. They send you a refurbished PS3 of the same model. I found another place that will actually fix you're PS3 & send it back to you so that you can keep the data that is on the Hdd. I tried to post earlier & I guess they thought I worked for them or something. I actually work for Symantec. PM me if you want the info for the company.

PS - they were actually cheaper then Sony too.

Your PS3 CAN be fixed.

When fixed, you will be able to transfer your save via the "data transfer utility".

But this in itself has a few steps that can trip you up. Read everything about this before attempting it.

And I recommend, removing everything from your old PS3 except game saves that cannot be backed up and backup those you can to USB.

On my first try it said 4 hours - I was trying to backup, movies, pics, mp3, game install and patch data. GB upon GB.

It failed and then failed again.

After removing "everything" except protected saves. It took 15 mins.

Good luck on getting a fix. My lodger fixed mine with a fan heater / and new thermal compound.
