Font legal rights and restrictions

I'm trying to create a logo for a friends band and I 'm wondering if using the Helvetica font made by someone is illegal. I did hear of a work around where you could just outline the font in Adobe Illistrator and use it for whatever you want. I'm just asking here on GTplanet for better confirmation.
