force feedback as a driving tool

Sorry if this has been covered, but I DID search it and although I found some old threads that touched on it I thought someone may be able to help me further.
I have been playing GT5P for a week or so now and although I am getting the hang of it there is one thing driving me nuts. I often hear of people "feeling" thier car step out or "feeling" a car on the brink of loss of control, via thier force feedback wheels. I use a logitech Driving Force PRO and I can't seem to "feel" anyting other than random shaking and resistance. I don't know how to tell what my car is doing through my FF, and to me it just seems my wheel shakes here and there or offers resistance to turn sometimes, but I lack the ability to understand what it's telling me. I have played mostly Nascar games before now as well as MCO back in the day and Its always been this way for me. .. I was hoping someone may tell me what to look for or feel for? I am going to get a G27 by the time GT5 is released but I'm using the DFP for a while yet.. is it just not a great wheel? or is it me?

sorry for the long post, and hopefully someone can help me out a bit.. thanks guys, Jeff

It's hard to 'feel' the road and car in 5p, at least for me it is, always seems disconnected.

DFP should be fine, I would suggest not using any aids, no power steering or power assist. Pick an arcade TT you like then start out with ffb at 8 and sowely lower it as you get a beter sense for what the car is doing, there are signs of braking out etc but it takes time to notice.

I'm sorry, my bad, I did not post enough info. I'm new here. I am using Pro physics, no aids exept traction control 2 and abs 1. I have my FF set at 7 or 8, can't remember exactly which.

I know exactly what you mean. Its a little weird, and may just be with DFP(which is what I use). Playing GT4 with DFP and then GT5P with DFP there is definite difference in feel for the wheel actually being attached to a pair of tires on the track. However I have no idea if this is just difference with this wheel and GT5P or if the FF is just not as good as GT4 period.

I'm going with the latter. Although the FFB in GT4 is crude, jerky, and nowhere near that of GT5P in finesse it tells far more about what the front wheels (and the rest of the car too) are doing. GT5P doesn't increase the turning resistance as the turning angle rises anywhere near as much and feels like there's a more than healthy dose of power steering on top of power steering if you get my point. Turning FFB as high as it goes improves the situation slightly but the feel is far still too spongy and soft. The tool used? G25.

I agree with the responders in the post so far: GT5P's feedback isn't as good as it should be, and isn't nearly as good as the feedback in GT4. There isn't much you can do about it. I'm assuming this will get fixed in the final release (it better, as it is a big problem). I use both the G25 and the DFP.

Edit: Let me add this from another thread I recently posted in:

"The biggest flaw, to me, in GT4 is that they model understeer very well, but they fail to communicate that to FFB wheels in any way at all. So you've got no idea when your front tires are beginning to lose grip. GT5p is this way also. It is very confusing to be unable to feel the understeer through my DFP or my G25. The result, for me, is that my corner entry speeds in the GT games suffer considerably because I never really know when my front wheels are approaching the limit of grip. Most other SIMS I've driven, even the minor ones like Ferrari Challenge, do a better job of realistically reporting understeer through a FFB wheel."

That's the one thing I just can't get adjusted to in either GT4 or GT5p. I'm used to feeling understeer build through the steering wheel. I realize that in real cars this varies considerably, but it should certainly be communicated in FFB for those cars where it is appropriate. For example, my Beetle and my Porsche (also a classic RR model), both give me tons of understeer feedback though the steering wheel, which lightens as the car gets to the limits of grip. The Porsche has a lot more finesse of course, but they are similar. My Toyota Prius? Um, no, I might as well be driving a dead fish. The steering wheel feedback is totally non-existant - the only way to feel understeer is through the seat of my pants.
