Built between 1928 and 1931, the Model A is widely regarded as being one of Ford's most successful vehicles selling over 5 million units throughout The Great Depression. During the 1920's, the famed Ford Model T although extremely successful began showing it's age mechanically and aesthetically. Other competitors such as Chevrolet had cars such as the Superior series with much more modern and attractive designs, features, and colors that the aging Model T lacked. Henry Ford needed a solution to stay competitive. He would design the mechanics of the new vehicle and his son Edsel Ford would design the body of the car. After the Model T ended it's 18 year production run in 1927, later that year Ford was ready to launch their all new car.
The Model A was powered by a 201 CID (3.3L) L-head 4 engine that created 40 horsepower. A big improvement over the Model T's T-head 20 horse motor. The A had a 3 speed sliding gear transmission and the vehicle weighed 2,265 lbs. The Model A was capable of reaching a top speed of about 65 MPH.
