a car that 22 years later is converted to an powerful good looking hill climb car ....
the Forge Motorsport Mk1 Golf aka Berg Cup Mk1 Golf 2013.

Forge are making a habit or turning heads with their cars at Autosport, and for 2013 they brought along their latest creation, this MkI Golf, and as ever it had been prepared to a meticulously high standard.

It’s an incredibly build: the ’81 chassis has been completely stripped back, dipped and rebuilt with a full T45 cage and 400bhp 1.8 engine hopped up with a Garrett turbo. Forge are targeting hill-climbs, and the Berg Cup in particular.

The guys had started with a rough but standard Golf Mk1 GTi. The shell was then stripped back and prepped with a cage and carbon roof panel. They wanted a completed project that would be road legal enough to drive to a track, tear it up all day and then drive home. All show and all go was the aim.

The engine is based around a 1.8T AGU block that’s been over bored by 2mm, with pretty much every other component being sourced from the aftermarket world.

The guys have got a whole army of people they have worked with over the years and the Golf has really become so much more because of these relations; it’s hard to explain but if you’re in the industry maybe you will understand. When you’re passionate about what you do then good things happen as a natural consequence. So it was with the Golf.

VW never favoured turbo power for their Golf until the fourth generation but the light, nimble chassis of the Mk1 is well suited to boost. The car has only an intercooler at the front end,
because in the interest of space, cooling and weight distribution the radiator has been moved to the rear of the Golf.

The KW ‘Berg Cup spec’ coilovers actually give a load of adjustability for Forge to play with, dependent on what they want to do. Because one day it might be on the track and the next popping to the shops; it’s all about making sure it’s used.

Road legal in the UK
Actually it's not. It should be, but it isn't - because paperwork.

It's registered as a 1983 Volkswagen Golf GTI with a 1780cc engine. If it's equipped with the 1.8T and has been overbored with a 2.0 TSFI head, it isn't a 1780cc, so it's not road legal due to an underdeclared engine capacity.

The modifications made means it scores so few points (for major components) that it shouldn't retain the original VIN or registration plate. This would have been picked up on an IVA test as required for heavily modified cars - which means it probably hasn't been IVAd as it should have been and won't be road legal.

And it's on slicks in all the shots of it on the road. That's very definitely not road legal.

It's also not a Berg Cup car. It's a track day toy that they made to look like a Berg Cup hillclimber.

Thanks for your comments, always appreciated.
Fair enough but the car is also known as the Berg Cup car.
