I checked my local TV listings today, and I found *gasp* network TV coverage for an F1 race!

Check your local listings for "taped coverage" of the San Marino GP!

(If it was live coverage, then you would have to wake up at 5 AM PDT to watch the race.)

This works out nicely for me.

I get to watch the NASCAR Nextel Cup race on Saturday evening (Subway Fresh 500 @ Phoenix International Raceway), and the F1 race on Sunday morning. :)

What time do your local listings list for CBS to show the GP?

I've been looking and can't find squat. I have a feeling I'll be watching it on Speed next friday instead. I read something about local CBS stations being able to pre-empt it for some dumb baseball game in certian markets......

uggh!

I have no issue with CBS showing the race. In fact it is kinda of good for exposure though 90% of Americans have no clue what F1 is. They will see "Indy cars" on CBS this weekend. But I wish the FIA let Speed show the race Live, like they always do and then CBS can do what they like...

Figures CBS is showing some of my fav GPs this year. Imola, Nurburgring, Barcelona...then Montreal Live (not that I care about that one) and I think Indy live this year too....

Early mornings in the summer are a tradition for my wife and I. I like the European races as they are shown at 7am and don't kill the whole day.

I'm from San Francisco, CA and my local CBS station is showing the race at 10 AM on Sunday.

Here are the TV listings for auto racing on CBS.

As for Americans confusing F1 cars with IndyCars...

We've had that problem with that ever since the Champ Car/IndyCar split. :(

Open-wheel racing (in America) is nowhere near as popular as it used to be.

CBS just updated that, last time I looked (Monday) it only had 4 things.

Here in NYC the local CBS station says 1-3pm...

As far as Indy cars go. To your average American, if it is a single seater and has wings it's an Indy Car...regardless. NASCAR is the only thing your average American can point out. Even then when I tell people my wife and I go to the USGP every year they usually go "Are your a Dale Jr. Fan? How did he do?". It's funny even at the USGP you get the meathead NASCAR fan (I'm not slamming NASCAR here but even NASCAR fans have to admit some of their fans are not the sharpest tacks in the bunch)...wondering why the "red" cars don't have a #8 on them, I s$@* you not.

I think they're going to show about 3-4 races from F1 this year on network TV. I have Speed though and like to watch it live (yes even early in the morning). :D

they are going to broadcast the next 4 races on cbs...here in the central time zone it will be broadcast at noon on Sunday...

 as far as I'm concerned...

Indy... A.k.a. American cars = ****ty

F1... A.k.a. Import cars = Quality

Indy... A.k.a. American cars = Quantity

F1... A.k.a. Import cars = Quality

well and then there's nascrap = Kia

Damn, I just realized they're not showing the San Marino race LIVE on Speed 👎 Guess I'll have to "watch" it through Live Timing.

At least here up north in Canada we had all F1 races broadcasted live for years, but the race description was from England ( I remember Murray Walker and James Hunt ).

Aah Canada, good beer, good F1 broadcasting eh :)

Hey, how are your Champ Car broadcasts?

Champ Car is the closest thing to F1 in North America.

Champ car is closer to a bunch of 40 something year old men with RC cars than it is to F1.

Ahem...

11 out of 19 Champ Car's 2005 drivers are under the age of 30.

Here are two of them...

Sebastien Bourdais (2004 Champ Car Champion)

A.J. Allmendinger (2004 Champ Car Rookie-of-the-Year, and 1st American Champ Car Rookie-of-the-Year since 1991)

And they're definitely not "RC cars"... :boggled:

Champ Car Specs

Power
Engine: Turbocharged, 2.65-litre (161 cubic inches) V-8

Horsepower: Approx. 750

Minimum Weight

As long as the annoncers don't call him Mike Schumacher again, then I'm okay. I wonder how CBS will deal with the "host broadcasters", and still appear like they know what they're doing.

I agree with kensei, I prefer the morning races we see in the US, they don't kill a perfectly good Sunday when it's just 8-10am.

Dude...I'm sorry...but champ cars are friggin irrelevant in the grand scheme of global motorsport. Not only that it's pathetic racing to watch but it has stupid rules, boring drivers, boring cars on boring curcuits with little to no media coverage or support. Cart/champ car had it's day but as far as I am concerned they have shot themselves in the foot.

Not that the IRL is much better but at least they have managed to get some media support and decent manufacturer support and leverage their driver lineups to make you somewhat interested in watching the races.

The IRL and champ car need to combine again to have any hope on being taken seriously in the global scheme of motorsport.

Right now they champ car is where drivers who can't get into F1 or failed in F1 go. IRL is where people who can't take either OR champ car's management go....

I think Bourdais and Allmendinger deserve a shot in the big leagues, will they get it, who knows. For that matter Danica Patrick looks good from the IRL as does Dan Wheldon and maybe not so much now but Scott Dixon too...

F1 is the top end of motorsport and the A1 series could become a big thing to if done right. Frankly some of the lower Euro and Asian Formula series are much more interesting than anything champ car or the IRL can manage.

We have all Champ races live on both sport English and French speaking channels here in Montreal + the qualifying sessions for the Champ Montreal race.
We also get all Nascar races too.
Until 2 years ago we even had the WRC on the French speaking channel ( RDS ) but unfortunately it has been canceled due to a lack of interest.
I was even expecting to get the DTM broadcasted in Quebec because there is a French Canadian in that serie. Unfortunaely my expectations were too high :(

You have got to be kidding me, this absolutely sucks. Now there will not be a replay on SPEED. How I am supposed to catch the race when I somehow find a way to miss the first showing? Who is going to do the broadcast on CBS?

I guess this may be a good thing, but then again it could go extremely badly too. The US definitely needs more exposure to F1.

Actually, there is a replay of it. I was looking up all the times and I'm pretty sure the replay is on Friday, a week after the race. Here on the west coast, they're showing the race at 10am (SDD) and on Speed, they're showing the second qualifying at 12pm. WTF is up with that? This scheduling really sucks :indiff:

Yes it really does. What is the point in having the replay a week later? I will have already heard all about it on here. Though I think I just saw who either won the race or who qualified on pole because of the email from the San Marino thread. Qualifying is on right now for me.

oh my god. i just saw the opening sequence until the commercial break.

this whole cbs thing is ridiculous. why couldn't the speed channel announcers do the job for cbs? derek daly....ugh. is anyone else annoyed from all the BOOM, WHAM, SLAM, BAM, sound effects? hahahaha.

and i guess they WILL be showing the 2nd qualifyings after the race, like morons.

bring speed to network tv! :(

These anouncers are horrible. I hate how the one guy pronounces Ferrari. He sounds like an Irish Chinese guy; "Fur-raw-ree."

Meh, I'll take what I can get.

lol, tell me about it. I just tuned in and the first thing I heard was "Jion-car-louw Fee-z-ke-la" crashing blah blah.... :yuck:

Maybe I'll just wait a week and watch the Speed rerun. I got a live Yankees game to watch anyway. 👍

the other guys have been doing it for like 12 years or something....that's really lame.

derek always has to explain everything like an elementary teacher....ugh. stupid americans.

First Announcer:"You see those round, black things on the car, there? They're spinning; do you see them? Those are tires. And they help the car race down the track!"

Second Announcer: "Wow, exciting stuff! Car racing has sure come a long way..."

:dunce:

I know all i have to say cbs sucks at doing f1 at least when speedvision does it sounds more exciting.

I will say that if Derek Daly didn't explain everything like we were two years old, he would be pretty good. At times, he can do some very good announcing. Sheehan on the other hand never really seems like he has much of a clue of what is going on. Though I can't really comment on today's race, as I didn't get to see it. I just know of how their announcing is due to past race coverage by the two of them.

The way he highlighted the wings during the first crash is what pissed me off the most he's like this is what keeps the car on the road and it's quite an inovation. I was like wtf i hope to god the other 3 races they do will be better if the f up canada then i will go down there and beat them my self. Heck i bet you anything nbc could have done it better since they have nascar

agreed...champ car is for F1 rejects...whats a bit sad is sebastien was going to get a shot in F1 with arrows but then they went under...also timo glock should still be in F1...as a tester...

A1 could have been a big thing but supposedly they are having problems with TV contracts and they may be delayed for awhile...maktoum has been going to bernie for help so who knows...

the lower formulas are quite entertaining...also you can spot talent and guys that will be in F1 very easily...those formulas have drivers of highly varied skill levels so some just demolish the competition...taku won 17 of 18 rounds when he was in British F3 :)

on a personal note i should be competing in a lower formula in europe soon so i can tell you firsthand it is a very satisfying drive coming up from karts...

Champ Car (formerly known as CART) is for F1 rejects!?

Before the the CART/IRL split in 1996... CART was also the stage for the world's best open-wheel drivers (such as 1978 Formula 1 CHAMPION Mario Andretti).

And let's not forget that several F1 drivers started their professional open-wheel racing careers driving Champ Cars (like Alex Zanardi and Juan Pablo Montoya).

Today, Champ Car is still a great test of driving skills for open-wheel drivers. They race on oval courses, street courses, and road courses. Every car is the same. There is no traction control or paddle shifting (you have to use a clutch and sequential stick shifter). You have to depend on your skills to win, not the car.

I do, however, agree that Champ Car and IRL have to get back to together to get back to the top. It's either that, or hope the IRL dies off soon.
