Hey all,

Just wish to confirm this statement of mine: are 4wd cars able to have more extreme drift angles than fr/mr cars?

From my experience so far, my R34 V-spec and my Evolution VI type RS are able to have more acute drift angles than my RX-7s...also, their handling is more 'confidence-inspiring' for a rookie like me:D I'm able to drift through a J-turn with my R34's nose turned 140 degrees or so...well, if I tried to exceed 100 on my fr cars, they always spin out.

Is this a 'rookie' problem or is this fact?

I like my yellow R34 very much

It's not just you, it's just how 4wd and RWD cars are...you can get more extreme drift angles with 4wd because while you're sliding sideways, the power to the rear wheels gives you forward momentum and the power to the front wheels keeps you from spinning out (if you're countersteering). With RWD, if the drift angle gets to extreme there's nothing keeping you from spinning (except maybe the brakes..but that'll kill your drift anyway).

Hmm, so does this mean that drifts will look most spectacular with 4wd cars?

One more thing...I find that in gran turismo 2 at least, I have difficulty trying to drive 'grip' style on my R34...when I see a corner, I usually drift past it using the 4 wheel drift method (no countersteer unless it's a J turn)...

In fact, I find that I can only grip if I'm using those high hp (over 450) sports cars like the Castrol supra, Zexel Skyline etc. They seem to be configured for grip, and for me at least, unless it's donuts you want, you shouldn't try to drift these monsters :D

Again, is it just me or is this fact?

My 'sweet spot' hp for drifting seems to be about 260-360 hp with simulation tyres

The drifts with 4WDs have less angle, but I think they look exciting because it actually looks like they are on rails going through a turn. Unless you're a person like CudaMan who can make a FR look like it's on rails, then it's going to take a lot of skill to drift like that. It's hard to make a FR car look like it's on rails unless you enter the corner really fast and then exit really fast.

You can drift monsters like the Castrol Supra or the Zexel Skyline. It just takes time to tune up and get used to, that's all. Also, although in real life they don't drift, it doesn't mean that you can't drift a modded car with a big spoiler in the rear. It's just like drifting a modded car, that's all with a big wing :D

In an AWD car, all four wheels are powered, so as long as you have good power going to the front wheels (say 40/60 or more) and aren't countersteering, all the car's contact patches are accelerating the car in one direction rather than fighting each other like they are when you are FR drifting with countersteer. In addition, with FR you can only countersteer as far as the wheel will turn, AWD cars can exceed that angle easily. In other words, you can point the car any direction you want and floor it and the car will go in that direction without a fuss. Of course, you can't just floor it all the time you have to accelerate just the right amount to stay on the correct line, but that's another topic for another day. AWD drifting is easier and has more extreme angles.

Hmm, Thio, what do you mean by 'on rails'? Do you mean that the car seems to be moving on some sort of track because of the way it's drifting?

And also, sometimes I quesition myself whether I'm drifiting or just 'skidding'. In my opinion, a car should look 'relaxed' when it's drifting, hence 'drifting'. It shouldn't look as though alot if effort is put into it...though there's been quite alot of debate regarding 'drifting' vs 'skidding' vs 'ass-dragging' vs 'powersliding', I still can't really get it straignt.

Perhaps what I need is a video, or GT2 replay file that shows the differences between:
drifting,
skidding,
ass-dragging and
powersliding,
then I'll probably finally be able to understand what the differences are. If there is such a vid, can someone give me direction or a link? Then probably I won't have to ask these sort of quesitions so often.

After all, a picture says a thousand words, a video shouts a million sentences :D

For me, when I look at my replays, somehow the car doesn't seem 'relaxed' enough :(

Hopefully someone can understand what I'm trying to say:rolleyes:

You should download a couple of GT3 videos that we have on these forums. Recently, with all of the drift comeptitions that we have, there are a lot of videos to download and watch, so it's to your advantage ;)

What I mean when I said that the car seems to be on rails is that eventhough the car is drifting, it's going so fast and the drifter is taking such a smooth line that it loioks like that they are on rails, like roller coaster rides. They are so fast yet they are so smooth and take such a fast line. Download CudaMan's Gran Dorifto and you'll know what I mean.
