Only one car and track.
Track Mods are available. But I doubt many are legal conversions.

This is a free race car simulator.

Racer is a free car simulator project (for non-commercial use), using high-end car physics to achieve a realistic feeling and an excellent render engine for graphical realism. Cars, tracks and such can be created relatively easy (compared to other, more closed driving simulations). The 3D files, physics and other Racer-specific file formats are documented. Editors and support programs are also available to get a very customizable and expandable simulator. OpenGL is used for rendering.

More of an arcade racer than a simulation, but I am currently having some fun with Trackmania. There seem to be several versions of it but I've started with Trackmania Nations Forever, which is a few years old now but standalone, a little buggy in places but has some cool "technical" tracks with loops, wall rides etc. A little more up to date is Trackmania 2, a "demo" is available here but it offers a lot of content, online servers, countless tracks and several themes/environments.

Still trying to figure some things out, like how one upgrades or changes their car, and I swear some of the opponents have more speed and grip than me, but perhaps I'm just average at it :)

Wow thanks for that! I've just purchased it. :)

I have been playing this between GT5 sessions for the past year:

Auto Club Revolution.

Free to play, about a dozen tracks available with alternative variations, wet weather, a nice varied garage and a custom livery editor. It also has multiplayer, mini challenges and "Beat the devs" challenges, leaderboards for every car and track combination, and is regularly updated with added content and improvements.

I like it a lot personally (for a free game), tuned cars have nice backfire gurgles and long periods of spitting flames when you let off the gas, graphics are pretty decent and it feels, in my opinion, more realistic than GT5 does in many areas of the physics system. Starter cars are bargin cheap in game, but super cars can take a bit of grinding to afford, unless you go down the microtransactions route.

Me too, but holy moses the downloads from Steam take forever. 2.5MB/s? Seriously?

But yeah thanks Motarded, a nice pack, I may even try the flight/train/tractor sims :)

Some of them will work under Wineskin. I used it for Simraceway, but I couldn't convince it to download cars or tracks (may be that it was behind my school's blockers)

If you like that one, http://www.bundlestars.com/ has a bundle with Race Injection for next to nothing but the other games look pretty awful. Race Injection is Race 07 with a few DLCs but not all of them.

Ooh thanks for the heads up on this too, Race Injection looks nifty. Did I spot a Reliant Scimitar? The other games aren't great looking but some look worth a couple of goes, can't go wrong at that price :)
