Front tire smoke looking ugly...

Hey guys, I was drifting my infinity G35 minutes ago and I found that in some corners smoke just comes out of the front tires and a little trail of rubber is left on the tarmac. I think that it Fs-up the look of the drift so I'd like to get rid of it.

It handles very well but this problem is just annoying me and seems like it persists through whatever changes I do to the amount of camber my car has (I have 10 at the back, I know this looks insane but believe me it REALLY helps the car's rear end to lose its grip, and at the front I have 2 to try to keep the front grippy in corners but it doesn't seem like it works). Has this ever happened to you and how did you get rid of the front tires smoking?

Well that depends - are you drifting with a wheel or with a controller?

The front tires smoke because you are not countersteering in the exact direction the vehicle is traveling. So pretty much if you're going sideways but your wheels are still pointed straight you're gonna get front tire smoke. The reason why whether you're using a controller matters is because to completely prevent front tire smoke you need VERY smooth countersteer, which is nearly impossible on a controller.

My best advice would be to enter a bit slower and use a flick over as much as possible rather than ebrake or just plain power over. Although it's definitely possible to get the right amount of countersteer with ebrake and power over it's just a bit tougher. Oh and also try to start countersteering just a tad bit earlier :)

👍

It also depends on what corners it's smoking at. And is it smoking on entry or midway through the corner? Because it's totally normal for front tyres to smoke whilst entering a corner, as this is where the angle is biggest. Also, if you're carrying a lot of angle round the corner you might not have enough lock to keep the wheels pointing 'forward'. This too is normal, and there's not a lot you can do to stop it.

If however, they are starting to smoke around long, mid-shallow angle corners, like Tsukuba's sweeper, then as SohnVonStig said, you're not pointing the wheels in the right direction enough. Which happens a lot with DS3's, not so much with wheels.

I can't believe the amount of rear camber you run too! Haha.

You might also try a bit more negative toe in the front so you can counter a bit more aggresively.

If you want to get rid of it, drift at less angle. If you want to drift with good angle then get over a little bit of smoke coming from the front wheels.

Aha! I do use a DS3 controller which seems like you guys think it's quite normal... It might just be aggravated on this car cause I don't get it with my other cars but hey, I will try to make smoother counter steer like you said :P Thanks for the advice 👍

I use a DS3 as well. I've been drifting since December and only recently have I been able to countersteer smoothly like someone using a wheel about 7 times out of 10.

Ok well, I've only been drifting for about two months more seriously so I guess I'm not far behind normal progress :P
