Hey Apple!

I work it out that a full flight will carry around 5 and a half tonnes of baggage.

The overweight baggage isn't necessarily because the plane can't carry it, but because of the people who have to load it on the plane. Plus extra weight uses more fuel.

Well I know the 747 that carries the shuttle is gutted pretty much, then they add the strengthening to hold the weight of the shuttle. Just trying to see if we could get comparison weights between the two.

Just curious, anyone know what an average 747 weighs with full passengers + luggage?

Linky :D

But to make it a bit easier:

Maximum take off weight for the 747-100: 333,390kg
Empty weight: 162,400kg

MTOW for the Shuttle Carrier: 322,000kg
Empty weight: 144,200kg

Sorry to be a Buzz Killington on the joke but I already found one flaw in that argument: Its only the 747 and not the other 7 or eight planes in the Airline fleet.

Now back to the funny:

The bag fees are there to offset the money they would have made using that space for freight and parcels.

Exactly: Cargo is more valuable to an airline than passengers. There's many hemisphere-hopping flights that take off with few passengers because they offset the amount of weight with cargo, which airlines charge more per unit of weight than humans.

As long as it's loaded properly, that is.

...also, NASA had a lot of airline miles built up that they had to use. The shuttle was going to be decommissioned where it was, but then they said "Hey, we've got all these miles, let's go to Disneyland!".
