G27 drifting questions

I'll start with "I drift in real life" and I'm trying to find something to do in my spare time that is familiar. Hence GT5.

The drifting is fairly realistic except that when I finish a drift, if i don't straighten the steering wheel off throttle, I'll spin instantly. Switch backs are nearly impossible and I've been at this for 4 hours straight today and more yesterday.

general questions: What does the FFB option do? I set it to 0 and 10 and see no difference what so ever. power steering or not makes no difference either. What am I doing wrong?

PS: I hate that I can't flat foot while shifting manually.

I also have a G27. yes the switchbacks are near impossible but what ill do in GT5 not real life is out for a very tight combo turn is in the switch for 1st to second turn downshift once so midway into the second turn i would drop for second to first gear then hit second again giving me more torque again.

With my S15 in real life ill go through a turn similar and not have to take such action so there are differences i can do most of the D1GP tracks on GT5 but one i cant is the fuji speedway because the buttons are not mappable so i struggle to press my handbrake. on other tracks ill turn of ABS and lock my wheels up with the brake lock up as similar to a handbrake pull the outcome is very similar in the end.

if you want to drift some time with your G27 my is PSN:TuzMyFuz80

I guess... letting off the gas slowly should just work though. it makes no sense.

holy crap.... yoshi? gtfo...

seriously? wow small world... <-bmw bum from e30tech haha

Lol small world indeed. How's tech w/o me?

Yoshi!

I just added you on facebook. I didn't realize I hadn't added you on there. I have the red E30 at Drift Nirvana every once in a while. I normally hang out there with Corey Z.

First thing I'll say is that you should build a cockpit. Seriously. It helps a ton. It's cheap to build, and I'm sure you can figure it out yourself. If not, I have some vague measurements for mine that I built from 2x4's. It feels pretty close to my E30.

Secondly, it's hard to learn how to straighten the car out compared to RL because you don't have a chassis moving around you, and because the wheel does not snap back to center as fast as a real car. That being said, you have to pay a lot of attention to what the wheel is doing to get a feel for the car. Most of the time, this means really exaggerating movements to get the car to straighten out. Most of the time you have to make sure you have the wheel pointed completely straight well before the car is straightening out, and drive out of it with the throttle. Obviously, if the car comes back a little bit the other way, you have to catch it. There are a lot of times you can end a nice, long slide with a four wheel drift, and just let it come back straight. I don't know why it works like this in the game.

I also use a G27. Do you guys play the Drift mode or online? Because theres a clear difference in the driving physics between the two. I personally think Drift Mode is more realistic, being smoother and more predictable. In online races the car feels ok at first, you can feel the grip on the tires. Suddenly when the rubber warms up it feels like driving on ice with bad tires. Plus, theres the force feedback which is very snappy.

thats why I started doing outside view rather than cockpit/bumper, helps learning a lot.

if you can grab an ls1 camaro in the used lot its an amazingly good car to learn to drift the dfgt wheel in gt5 smoothly. the stock zr1 vette is decent but overxompensates with huge power, light weight, and is twitchy to learn on, dances around a lot on exits when you cant read the wheels feedback yet.

he caterham is also good because you can see the steering angle to have visual feedback so well.

I bought a G27 when I purchased GT5 as well. I did a bit of drifting in GT4 but the DFP is just not that great for drifting (geartrain is too tight and loud). I have found a really easy car to practice drifting with in GT5 is my real car, an '04 Pontiac GTO (or Holden Monaro). It's a bit heavy, but has enough power to pitch it sideways and stay there. Comfort Hards and an oil change are all you need. 👍

for some reason no matter what i try when i try to drift with my g27 using handbrakes even if i correct the steering i always end up losing control and spinning out while exiting corners

i have to resort to using my controller to drift since my g27 just does not cut it

It takes practice, but it's definitely possible. I wouldn't go down to a DS3 because you haven't had enough practice on the G27. Stick to it! 👍

practice practice practice then eventually you will be very satisfied with your drifting but then 2mins later then force feedback will go all wack and back to square one

if any of you guys want to add me and drift some time ill be up for nothing better to do over these holidays

I've been at it with my G27 all night trying to figure out this drifting thing. I keep having the same snap oversteer problem as well. Sigh :/

look at some youtube video's of people drifting with the G27 while you can see the wheel. Youll see that after countersteering to stop the car from spinning out he steers backinto the corner to maintain the drift. Also; on exit of the drift; yu have to turn the wheel back into the neutral position yourself, fighting the ffb.

It feels weird but worked for me on the DFGT..

I've discovered my wheel needs to be 100% fixed to a surface. When you finish a drift you have to manually steer back into the center. But the FFB is so tight I get muscle cramps after a while. I feel like I'm getting the hang of it but I really need to solid mount everything. I'm getting kind of tired of my shifter flying off now and then.

I put realistic damage on, I didn't last one lap. :scared:

I'm still trying to get switch backs. It seems like I have to partially steer back to center and gently start the next drift then get on the gas.

you have it exactly right one course that i felt like i eventually mastered that technique was on autumn ring full course after that every other course is simple

Apparently you can switch a DFP to 200 or 270 degree mode by doing this:
200 degree mode (select + R3 + right paddle)

Is there anything like that for the G27? Would make things wayyyyy easier for drifting.

I have been able to do the same in previous games but there doesnt seem to be anything i have found to help the G27

Can you do a button combination in your real car to make it 200deg steering?

;) Didn't think so. Leave it and practice practice practice guys!! It may seem impossible now but it will pay off later when you can pull off an awesome set of drifts.

It's just irritating being in an online server with a 12 year old kid who has a Murcielago and is drifting circles around your humble little S13 :P
I can do pretty well with the controller, but I'm extremely slowly getting on with the G27.

Maybe, but just leave the room and join a new one. Everyone knows a Murcielago shouldn't be drifting anyway. :)

There are a lot of "open drift practice" or "newb drift" rooms open around night time PST. I've met quite a few people at or near my skill level that were fun to slide around with.

I was so irritated by kids bashing into others and stuff that i now only create my own rooms. I then practice by myself untill more people join.. You start slamming into people on purpose; you get kicked. Almost anything else is fine;

AWD: Fine
Suicide runs: Fine
1000Hp: you go girl! Knock your self out!
Racing slicks: Fine
Cant tandem but want to learn: Stimulated

Ladies and gentlemen. It's officially possible to drift with the G27. All it takes is alot of practice. I aced it yesterday and i haven't had this much fun in a while with video games.. Just keep at it! I use the wheel on Simulation, Power steering On and FFB on 5.
