G27 + shift2= ?

Hi everyone,
I am from Taiwan, and this is my first article, so please forgive me for my English. :dopey:

I have been reading this forum for some time, and I am considering buying SHIFT2 and G27 for my PS3.

First of all, I am aware of the bugs and problems that SHIFT2 has.
But the videos on youtube and discussion on this forum seem to indicate that SHIFT 2 is a great racing game that is full of thrill and excitement (albeit the freezing and steering lag…)

And it seems that as long as you are not using super-fast cars, it won’t freeze (?)

So I am considering buying SHIFT2 and G27.

The problem is, can G27 and SHIFT 2 satisfy me?

What I want is a steering wheel with a clutch paddle and 6-speed manual gearbox that works well with a racing game.
I want a good simulation of the interaction between clutch, gas, and brake to practice heel-and-toe.

Can SHIFT2 and G27 provide such experience?
Please give me some advice, thank you.

(Fanatec or Thrustmaster steering wheels are too expensive from where I am, so they are not my options.)

By the way,
I also had a copy of GT5, and I am curious about G27 on GT5.

I heard that GT5 does not fully support G27.
The buttons can not be remapped.
And you have to fully release gas paddle when changing gears with the clutch paddle, or it will go to N.

But do these problems really render G27 un-enjoyable on GT5?

again, thank you for your reply.

When I had a G27 it was fine with GT5 all i did was have a controller next to me mapped as #1 G27 #2 and I did the horn and stuff like that when I was online.Force Feedback was fine. My G27 broke so I never had a chance to play SHIFT2 with it.But I used my DFGT on SHIFT2 and it was fine, hope this helps

When you first start out it's annoying but after awile it get's like a habit faster and faster. Plus it's pretty real stalling and all that stuff. No problems with shifting or clutch on gt5.

terrific! got one more reason to buy SHIFT2 and G27

hope there will be a patch to fix the freezing soon
then we all can enjoy this great racing game

thanks again!

Not sure if this problem occures on consoles+G27 because I play on PC and use a G25, but if it comes to heel to toe downshifting the game is lacking precision and operability.

What I mean is you just cannot brake, press clutch and heel-kick the throttle properly at the same time.

Sometimes it works, sometimes the driven axle locks up or the revs drop too low.

Not saying its undriveable, but I find it not precise enough (game is alot of fun though).

Like in WTCC 07 and GT-R Evo (SimBin PC racing sims) its also possible in Shift 2 to change gears without pressing the clutch, your car will stall though if it comes to a hold and is in gear without you pressing the clutch.

So you literaly can't miss-shift :-/

In GT5, which is the only racing game I came across where its actually working, you CANNOT change gears without pressing the clutch...BUT you have to perform the "triangle-button" trick during the starting countdown (3,2,1)....it means you have to press the button on the Logitech shifter console which is on the same position as the green triangle button on the PS3 controller.

After that the clutch is working properly in GT5, if you don't do that trick, its the same story as with the other games, gear changes without clutch possible.

Heel to toe works perfect in GT5.

And your English is perfectly well, I've seen Americans write total gibberish compared to your typings (I'm German)

Okay that is with a G25 only.(GT5P)Not G27, when I had mine if you wanted to shift without clutch all you had to do was hit the paddle upshift or down-shift then go back to H-shifter and you could shift without clutch. With G27 the clutch always works no button pushing or anything.

Really? I read otherwise but since it also does work with that button trick I give it a thumbs up for GT5.....but I still don't really get it why it doesn't work properly even in the Simbin sims.

Yesterday I made a little video in which the heel to toe in Shift 2 worked for some reason xD

My guess sometimes it seems to depend on which car you drive, just a guess....or maybe you need just good timing

I've been using the g27 but driving straight out of corners at any speed is difficult even after tweaking the settings. The steering input is not well designed. what was so wrong with Shift's steering input? The wheel doesnt even center its self realistically during turns.

I use a DFGT so might be different. I have been very pleased with the FFB in S2. Granted, the wheel settings took a long time to get right for me, and it differs with everyone. Also even after getting the wheel setting right, each car needs to be tuned right especially the steering lock.

Same with the G25, it lacks self-centering-force (or whatever its called) so in tight bends you have to literally push it back straight.

I have the Handling Mini Mod, first Patch + DLC installed and didnt change too much in the wheel settings (can post set up later), but it helps alot to fiddle with the cars suspension (steering response) and differential.

that handling mod is worth a try, also the steering got better after the first patch.

G27 works great for racing, dont even bother drifting tho... Its next to impossible on shift.
G27 works great on gt5. Only problem is u cant flat shift but u get used to it quickly

His stig'ness

You won't play Shift 2 on ps3 like you want.

You play Shift 2 on ps3 like Shift 2 wants.

You adapt to it, and when you do. OHHH MAN!!!

G27 is great for any racing game in PS3 or PC IMHO.

Is it the best of the best? reviews say no, but for half the price of the best it more than capable.

Plus, between that and a pad...

Both Thrust-master and Fantec are way to overrated. While G27 is still the best, not just mechanically but considering the price it's not that idiotic like for Thrust-master.

May be overrated but OHHH so quiet (Fanatec CSR and Elite pedals) with great feedback. Unless the exception, the G27 wheels I have heard sound like something is breaking. To each their own, I wanted a cross-platform wheel and my Fanatec has lived up to the hype. Works great on all of the PC, PS3, and Xbox games I have tried.
