Game freezes after car upgrade?

I have a Nissan Fairlady 350Z ST. Most upgrades were added, and I'm driving the car fine. But then I decide to add the level 5 turbine kit (~$45000) and racing brakes. Now, when I try to race the car the game freezes while loading any track, in both sim and arcade modes. I can still race any other car, but not that one, and I can't take off the turbine or brakes. I'm still at a level of the game where $50000 is quite a bit of money, and I like the car!

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Probably a disk read error, you can join the club.

Maybe buying a lens cleaning disc will help, they cost no more than £10, welcome to GTP :).

Oh, and when you reset the Playstation, does this happen with any other cars, or just the Fairlady?

Luckily just to the Fairlady. I wiped my disk down, but haven't bought a lens cleaner yet. I guess I'll also have to invest in a second memory card too! Grrr!!! Definately don't want to lose everything!

I'd be concerned about that glitch since it might become a problem with other cars in the future. You should get a new memory card and start over to see if the same thing happens. I know you're thinking that you have a huge mountain to climb by starting over at this point, but would you rather have built up a huge garage and millions of credits and then have everything become unreadable or multiple cars you can't race.

So make sure your PS2/GT4 combo is working right from the very beginning before you invest more time into the game.

And besides, that Fairlady Z ain't exactly some car you want to enshrine in the Race Vehicle Hall of Fame. :ouch:

You can remove the turbo while the car is in the garage. Once the car is loaded and the arrow is on the garage you have to press the Start button and it will bring up the Settings screen where you can modify the car's settings.

Hey! Guess what? I built the same car that you have and added Opera Parts plus that Stage 5 Turbo. Man, I went to enter it into a race (Beginner FR) and it locked my game up solid. That is a definite glitch in GT4. I'll have to tell you to avoid using that car or Turbo combo. Just use the garage to change that turbo setting back to None (which allows you to enter the race), otherwise you're screwed.

I'll be darned. Thank heavens no damage was done since I already saved my stuff.

Ok, but does anyone know how to fix it? The only way I know to modify the car (take off parts) is from the toolbox at the tracks? Any other way?
Do you know about the start button trick at home? If you press the start button while you're at home, the game will go straight to the parts settings screen, and you can remove your level 5 turbine kit.

No, I didn't know about that ... I'll give that a try, and report back! Thanks.

Yeh, so nothing is wrong with your memory card or PS2 so ignore all that other crap I mentioned and definitely buy yourself another car if you need one with more HP. Heck, maybe you discovered the most expensive non-modification you can do to a car. :yuck:

I suspected something was wrong when the Stage 5 Turbo said Original. :grumpy:

Ok, so I used the Start button and got in. Experimented with multiple settings (set everyting back to normal except turbine in case there was a conflict between parts), but it still crashed.

Oh well, at least I got my car back with its 350HP. :ouch: And, yeah, that's $45000 down the tubes.

Thanks for your help, guys!

You HAVE to put the turbo setting back to Normal in order to race the car at all. It's that frickin' non-turbo. I raced it without the turbo at the Beginners FR and it trounced the competition so you can at least make some money with it and decide whether you want to keep it or sell it for a vehicle more suitable to you. Hey, this whole turbo fiasco thing was annoying fun and gave me something to gripe about after it locked my game up twice, so it wasn't a total waste.

Next time, choose a car with no Tuner Village parts problem. That would be ANY other car in the game. Just kidding. A few weeks ago I bought Stage 5 turbos for a few of my vehicles but I haven't tried racing with them yet. I almost don't want to find out whether they'll work or not.

Last word: Buy the supercharger and use that. You can race with it and it works fine. The other Z's I just bought had the same problem. If you like Z's, there are a couple in the Tuner section in the Full Model showroom that are nice, but probably too expensive for you now.
