Gear for camping

So, i'm going on a canoeing and camping trip this coming weekend. We're expecting some choppy waves on the lake en route to our campsite and we're expecting to paddle for about 20km.

I want to travel with my dslr.

My question is the following: Is my lowepro backpack type case with rain cover sufficient or should I invest the $60 in a Pelican case?

For those who don't know, pelican cases are designed to withstand drops from over 15 feet, being fully submerged underwater, and set on fire while still protecting the contents inside.

The lowepro case is pretty light - probably not more than 1.5 pounds. The pelican is 1.5 kilograms or 3 pounds. Plus the camera gear which is an additional 3.5-5 pounds.

I'm leaning towards the pelican just for that added peace of mind.

Suggestions? Comments?

If you don't end up tipping or dropping it off a cliff this weekend, you'll at least feel safe and not worry about it. Additionally, there'll be some other time when you will need it. It's a good thing to have.

I just wrap my camera in a winter hat that's too small for my head. Yezzz.

I'd buy the Peli. But then I want a Peli case because they're cool, and can't really justify it for my needs, so when someone else almost needs one, I recommend it immediately.

No, seriously, if you're expecting the gear to take a dip, you'll need more than a Lowepro backpack.

I just picked up the Pelican 1200 today. It might be a bit too small for the body + 2 lenses. If it is, i'll consider grabbing the 1300 and loading everything 'standing' rather than laying on their sides. The 1300 is a few inches deeper and about a pound heavier.

I might even manage a tight fit. The lack of shock protection from a tight fit doesn't worry me too much since the main purpose of this case is water proofing.

BTW - for anyone that has never seen a pelican in action, check youtube!!
