Gear shifts when I unpause during race

Firstly hello everyone, long time lurker and GT veteran, but decided to create an account to discuss/moan about/enjoy GT Sport.

Ok I find this utterly bizarre. When you pause during a race you must push X to unpause, but when you do it shifts down a gear! Why would they design it so that a menu input is simultaneously a gameplay input!? It essentially means it's interpreting one input as two, one after the other. This makes no sense to me at all, no other game does this. Is it a bug?

My only workaround is to unpause and then immediately hit square to shift up (back to the gear I was already in), but I have to time it right. Too fast and it doesn't recognise the button press. I'm shocked that this is still the case so far after release.

You could remap the buttons, so the unpause is something that doesn't affect your lap, like turn indicators.

Would this not change the function of the X button for all menus rather than this one specifically.

I'm really surprised this hasn't been raised as an issue before. It's so basic. No other racing game has this glitch. It's a pretty poor UX design oversight.

Remapping wouldn't change the function of the X button for menus. It would change the function of the X button for driving.

So instead of downshifting with X, you would remap downshifting to another button. Then make sure X is assigned something that doesn't cause any problems during driving, like turn indicator or flashing headlights.

If you notice, it only does when your over a certain RPM after the pause.
Not for mine, will do it at any point, although the only weird observation is that it depends on the car and - as far as I can tell - the specific type of gearbox that the car seems to have...

I have X set as upshift, so if I'm in an arcade race and I have to pause I just wait 'til it's at redline. When I come back and unpause it immediately shifts to the next gear and I'm on my way.

I use X to DOWNshift every other racing game, so this is really just a workaround for a terrible piece of game design, which I can't do without changing the way I play every game.

This is strange to me 'cause every modern racing game I jump into has a default square-downshift and x-upshift to begin with. Kind'a how a sequential shifter works, pushing forward to shift down and pulling to shift up.

But I do agree about the design aspect. It's annoying in any game when unpausing affects the gameplay.

Lol, yup. I started mapping it to X=downshift and Square=upshift years ago. I guess because X is at the bottom, so downshift. So I usually switch them in every game.
