Gear/Tranny Trick Investigation

I don't play GT4 much any more, but one of the bookmarks I have on my browser is to boombexus' 'The Gear Trick' thread. I accidently clicked on it earlier today and had a read through the thread. I've never used the gear/tranny trick myself and from what I've read about it (in boombexus' thread and a few others on the board) there's some doubt about just how effective the trick is in GT4. I haven't been able to find any real performance numbers before and after the trick. The only performance figures people seem to post are laptimes they did before and after applying the trick. This isn't very scientific, IMO, since there are far too many variables in the equation. I'm considering doing a GT4 gear trick effectiveness investigation, but I don't know if someone has already done one (if so, please link me because I can't find it) or even if anyone cares about it.

So, is there any demand for a GT4 (and perhaps even GT3) gear/tranny trick effectiveness investigation?

i've tried the Tranny-trick on my 300mph-cars, but i don't think there is a big and verynoticeable difference. the difference at my cars was about 0,5 to 2mph.....not a lot! haven't tried it on lap-cars....

I was thinking more about testing medium speed acceleration than top-end. I've done a little example below. What I'd do for a number of cars would be to note the default gear ratios then test some things like the top speed in each gear, in-gear acceleration, acceleration through the gears, 400m and 1000m acceleration etc. Then I'd modify the gear settings using the gear trick and re-test to see if there are any noticable differences. Perhaps the FGT isn't the best car, though, due to the low overall times involved in acceleration. Maybe a slower car would be a good idea for a test. So, is anyone interested?

The following is just the testing on the default setup of the FGT.

IMO

Tranny trick provide the closest gear, so it should improve lap time if used wisely.

Tested on GT2 and GT4 (1000m and 300mph), lower final drive will make faster engine response like lighter flywheel. Scaff done some testing on this too.

So, final drive ratio has more acceleration effect than tranny trick. With some exception, auto 15 at 2.500 final drive should be faster than auto 15 at 5.500.

amp88, you'll want to look here for some good reading and some insight about the tranny trick...

I had a look through that thread before, but it mostly contains opinion (whether it be right or wrong it's still just opinion) and laptimes. From what I could see, there were no performance figures listed apart from laptimes.

I think it's better comparing different final drive than comparing short gearing (tranny trick) vs normal gearing. Comparing the latter can be unreliable because the best gearing is gearing that match the car power band. If one of them happen to be closer to optimal gearing, you get good time for it.

It's like comparing gear ratio that aligned like "/" to gear that aligned like "\".

Tranny trick is just a way to create shorter gearing. If your final drive when using tranny trick is lower than default final drive, of course you are faster.

so that means that i'm faster with a lower final at a specific auto-setup, than with the default final?? that's really interesting stuff you've put up here guys!!
