Singer George Michael has died aged 53, his publicist has said.

The star, who launched his career with Wham in the 1980s and later continued his success as a solo performer, is said to have "passed away peacefully at home".

Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT.

Police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

Michael, who was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in north London, sold more than 100m albums throughout a career spanning almost four decades.

Damn. Last Christmas indeed.

This seems eerily similar to when Prince died; suddenly, at a fairly young age, with no clear reason as to why, yet foul play is quickly ruled out.

R.I.P. indeed.

Pneumonia in 2012 sort of suggests it was something respiratory.

R.I.P., as a big fan of eighties new-wave he was a great talent we've lost for sure.

If he died because of a defective heart and he literally could have received someone else's... 2016 I swear to god...

I'm reading on Facebook (I know, I know) that his death had been announced (as a hoax) earlier in the week? Does anyone know if that's true? It'll be unconnected, I'm sure, but a bit creepy nonetheless.

I'm pretty sure Facebook announced his death several times in the last couple of years already.

I came across the news in the 'GTP vs. ...' thread earlier, and much like Paul Walker's death I thought "oh it's just another hoax"...

Unfortunately it isn't :(. I'd been bragging that if I survive WHAM! 2016 I'd 'retire' and put an end to the game for myself, and at this point that feels like a respectful thing to do IMO - his music and the game won't be forgotten, but it'll let me (and maybe others) move on.

A music channel here in Australia has dedicated an hour to George Michael's biggest hits, and rather fittingly, the last song is Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me...

RIP George Michael

You have been loved. One of my all-time favorite vocalists. Rest in peace, George. :(

Sad news - I can't say I was ever a fan, but it seems too soon for an 80s icon to be dying - as the tongue-in-cheek thread here on GTP proves, his music is both unavoidable and an integral part of the musical heritage of anyone over the age of about 40, esp. here in the UK.

I heard it was a heart attack which can happen out of the blue...

RIP Georgios

George's partner today is strongly suggesting it was suicide through Twitter although he has since deleted the posts.

The story. He claims his account was hacked. Quite the coincidence that your account gets hacked and they happen to tweet out the Michael is dead and it turns out to be true.

Huh? He'd been dead for a week already - it was the same guy who found his body... the question is actually about whether or not, one week later, he tweeted that George Michael killed himself or if those tweets were the work of a hacker.

The article I quoted refers to Michael's death on Christmas day (Sunday) and then says the tweets came on Sunday and there are no specific dates mentioned so I thought it was the same day. My bad.
